The Networks & Innovation Directorate comprises highly skilled professionals with backgrounds in engineering, science and business/commerce. The core responsibility is to plan the power system and market of the future, innovate in how we operate and develop the grid, to ensure we meet climate change targets and decarbonise the electricity system. Creating a culture of continuous improvement that drives technical and process innovation, is central to delivering in this role.
The Future Power Systems function is responsible for providing strategic thought leadership around solutions to the power system resource adequacy and flexibility needs of the power system which are consistent with government renewable targets and carbon emission budgets in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Examples include development of the types and volumes of capacity needed and emissions modelling in the context of the new carbon budgets for Northern Ireland.
The Future Power Systems Function is also responsible for the development of our Innovation & Research strategy, championing the use of new innovative solutions across the organisation to allow us to achieve our strategic objectives. Building relationships and partnerships with research institutions and academic organisations to ensure Ireland and Northern Ireland remain at the forefront in the integration of future technologies is essential to assist in achieving zero carbon by 2050 and to provide research into how we can achieve our 2030 targets.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and champion the introduction of change in power system planning ensuring that we can meet our ambitious strategic goals for renewable electricity integration outline in Shaping Our Electricity Future and our broader ambition in whole system energy planning.
  • Support the head of function by leading team responsible for undertaking analytical studies to ensure security of supply and flexibility in Northern Ireland’s power system and the All-Island Single Electricity Market.
  • Lead and support a team to identify and deliver on a range of robust, comprehensive and clearly communicated electricity system studies by providing direction for the team, allocating resources to meet priorities and managing issues as they arise.
  • Act as the key point of contact within the directorate for industry and market trends with ability to determine their potential impact on the organisation. Provide thought leadership and advocate industry best practices and principles in the context of future power system ready to operate at up to 100% renewables at any point in time.
