  Perform general building maintenance, repair, and support tasks at the National Agricultural Library. This position assists with preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, service calls, and general facility upkeep to help maintain a safe and functional work environment.

  Key Responsibilities

• Perform duties associated with the General Maintenance Worker position in accordance with contract requirements, FSE procedures, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
• Perform general maintenance and minor repairs involving building finishes, doors, hardware, fixtures, furniture, equipment, lighting, plumbing, and related facility components as assigned.
• Assist skilled trades and engineering personnel with inspections, repairs, preventive maintenance, service calls, and material handling.
• Use hand tools, power tools, ladders, carts, and maintenance equipment safely and appropriately.
• Support housekeeping of work areas, mechanical spaces, storage areas, and maintenance shops.
• Maintain accurate work order notes, material usage records, logs, and other required documentation.
• Communicate professionally with supervisors, team members, customer representatives, and facility personnel.
• Support emergency response, after-hours work, weekend work, or on-call requirements when needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Relevant experience in general building maintenance, repair, facilities support, construction, trades, or a closely related field.
• Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, ladders, carts, and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow work orders, instructions, safety procedures, and site rules.
• Strong reliability, professionalism, customer service, communication, and attention to detail.
• Ability to pass required background check, drug screening, badging, security, or site access requirements.
• Valid driver’s license may be required for positions that operate company or site vehicles.Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working in federal, government, research, institutional, industrial, or commercial facilities.
• Experience supporting HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, doors, hardware, or general facilities maintenance tasks.
• Experience using CMMS, work order systems, safety programs, or formal maintenance documentation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-trade operations and maintenance team.

Physical Requirements

This position may require standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, lifting, carrying tools or materials, working in mechanical spaces, and performing duties indoors and outdoors in varying conditions. Specific requirements will depend on the final position assignment and worksite needs.
