Job Description

Primary Purpose:

The General Manager of Railway Operations is a pivotal leadership position responsible for ensuring safety and overseeing the daily operations of a large craft and management workforce in either the Nothern or Southern region. This role involves reviewing, recommending, and implementing operational processes to optimize productivity, ensuring trains and crews operate safely and efficiently. As a key contributor to the business planning process, the General Manager ensures alignment with customer expectations and the company’s strategic objectives. Additionally, this role involves responsibility for personnel development, fostering a positive culture, change management, and motivating both craft and management teams.

Principal Duties:

  • Lead safety culture and enforcement of safety rules for their region.

  • Ensure strict compliance with all railroad operating rules, safety regulations, and Federal Railroad Association (FRA) guidelines.

  • Serve as an influential communicator across all organizational levels.

  • Develop and manager the operational budget, control costs, and optimize resource utilization.

  • Develop and oversee the operational budget, exercising cost controls measures, and optimizing resource allocation.

  • Monitor key performance indicators and implement measures to improve operational efficiency.

  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by providing reliable and efficient railroad service.

  • Governance of compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards.

  • Identify and mitigate operational risks to ensure safe and reliable service.

  • Ensure compliance with NS Operating Rules through training, labor agreements, and federal regulations.

  • Develop and implement long-term strategic plans to improve operational efficiency and profitability.

  • Lead incident and accident investigations, identify root causes, cooperate with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and recommend changes to minimize the risk of reoccurrence.

  • Demonstrate leadership aligned with the company’s strategic goal.

Job Related Experience:

Minimum Level: Division Superintendent or higher

Preferred Level: General Manager or higher

Education:

Preferred Level: Bachelor’s Degree (BS) or higher
