Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide. This position is located within the Visualization and Mapping Unit (VMU) in the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) within the Service for Geospatial Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT), of the UNGSC, Brindisi, Italy. The incumbent will report to the Chief VMU or designated officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Geospatial Information Officer is responsible for the following: • Locates and defines new mapping and cartographic, including 2D and 3D visualizations processes for improvement opportunities. • Identifies appropriate geospatial data sources (including open data and big data) for mapping projects. • Collaborates with technical teams to ensure geospatial data integration for mapping purposes, including indoor-outdoor Digital Twins. • Performs and documents methods, processes and quality assurances of cartographic and related outputs and apply Agile methodologies. • Utilize advanced mapping techniques and statistical methods to identify trends and patterns in structured and unstructured sources of information and data. • Develops and implements various analysis, reporting, visualization and symbology standards and quality control as well as quality assurance capabilities. • Creates dynamic web 2D/3D maps, visualization, dashboards and administrates related content in the UN Geoportal. • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in geoinformatics (geomatics), geospatial information, Earth sciences, remote sensing or other related geoscience field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with additional 2 years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Job – Specific Qualification

Certification in Project/Programme Management methodology by an accredited body (e.g. PMP, PGMP, PRINCE 2 Foundation Project Management certification or practitioner level) or equivalent is desirable. ITIL Foundation (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) certificate is desirable. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in geospatial information management, applied spatial analytics, earth observations, mapping, applications development, data visualization or related area is required. Experience in utilizing geospatial software in mapping, and web map services development such as producing vector tiles, geospatial dashboards and publishing geospatial content is required. Experience with team and project management implementing Agile principles is desirable. Experience in 3D/Digital Twins or related area is desirable. Experience with UX principles to design user-friendly GIS applications and interfaces is desirable. Experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
