Program Overview
WRI Indonesia is an independent research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. At WRI Indonesia, we aim to bring innovations in research and business approaches in order to create the enabling conditions for Indonesia to achieve robust economic growth while respecting environmental and social values. We seek to contribute to the accomplishment of ambitious sustainable development goals through working with leaders in public and private sectors, as well as collaborating with civil society organizations, in turning big ideas into action.
Within our Food-Land-Water (FLW) Program, we strive to protect and restore ecosystems. Freshwater (hereinafter referred to as ‘water’) is a vital element in the ecosystem that supports human life, natural resilience, and economic sustainability. Access to clean, sufficient, and affordable water resources is essential for ensuring justice, equality, environmental services, and ecosystem resilience. However, anthropogenic and climatic factors have challenged water security and safety in Indonesia. According to the Aqueduct Country Rankings, Indonesia is ranked 55th for baseline water stress, 10th for drought risk, and 14th for riverine flood risk out of 164 countries. Therefore, water program within WRI Indonesia aims to accelerate contribution for water-related ecosystem protection and restoration, improving human well-being, and contributing to the equal economic growth. Freshly started in 2024, the water program of WRI Indonesia continues research and prepares field implementation programs collaboratively with public and private stakeholders.
General Internship Roles
Water Science and Engineering Research Intern will support research activities within the water security sub-cluster, especially on topic related to water resources management aim to improving ecosystem’s resilience and people’s wellbeing. The intern will be actively involved in conducting desktop study that include data collection and analysis on the topic of water science, water management, and water engineering under direct mentorship from Water Program Lead. The intern will also have the opportunity to work with other WRI Indonesia programs on cross-cutting issues during the internship period. Contribution given by the Intern will support the Water Program in enhancing the use of scientific-evidence for policy recommendation, knowledge product development, and/or the further development of water projects within WRI Indonesia.
The Intern will be based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement. In support of WRI’s DEI commitment, you are responsible for actively participating in these collaborative efforts by integrating equity into your work, our workplace, and the organizational culture.
What You Will Learn
The Intern will gain experience in the following areas:
- Learning experience and exposure to water related topics, such as water science and water engineering, and its application by non-profit organization
- Develop strong research skills in applying scientific methodology and analyzing data on water science and engineering topics
- Strengthen ability to effectively communicate research findings
- Developing engagement and collaboration skills
What You Will Need
- Bachelor student or recent university graduate in disciplines related with water resource management, environmental science, environmental engineering, or other relevant fields.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and summarize large volumes of academic and non-academic references within limited time frame
- Basic understanding and knowledge related to spatial analysis, data engineering, or groundwater are added values.
- Strong interest in nature conservation and protection, and people wellbeing improvement
- Demonstrate a strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple task efficiently
- Business proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia on both verbal and written communications
- Ability to produce clear and concise written product
- Ability to work collaboratively
- Ability and willingness to travel if assigned
- Legally able to take internship program in Indonesia
Duration
3 (three) months, with possibility of extension subject to individual performance evaluation, project needs, and budget availability.

Must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.
Final candidates might be required to take a writing test and to produce two writing samples when needed.
