The IRC’s Global Surge Team (GST) is a roster of esteemed and highly qualified humanitarian professionals who deploy on short notice to non-emergency and emergency contexts to support the IRC’s mission. Members of the GST provide specialist support where talent is most needed for short-term deployments of up to three months. The GST is a flexible employment opportunity for staff, requiring members to be available for deployments only 50% of the year (with opportunities for additional deployments if incumbent is interested).

Members of the GST who specialize in emergencies are deployed to support either existing country programs in their emergency response, or to initiate a new program in a crisis zone. The overall responsibility of the team is to design, develop, and manage the IRC’s on-site humanitarian response, allowing us to meet the immediate needs of the affected population rapidly and effectively.

Job Overview:

The Emergency Nutrition Coordinator, Global Surge will provide technical leadership and direction for an effective, high quality, lifesaving nutrition response. The Emergency Nutrition Coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of nutrition programming, particularly the community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) and infant and young child feeding in emergencies. They will likewise ensure national and international guidelines are adhered to as well as uphold quality standards and ensure results-based monitoring & evaluation.

Major Responsibilities:

• Deliver high quality and timely emergency nutrition responses;

• Support rapid needs assessments and provide prioritized recommendations for nutrition activities;

• Design nutrition program responses and strategy, in coordination with internal and external actors;

• Coordinate closely with IRC’s health, water and sanitation, food security, and other relevant teams to ensure integrated programming across sectors;

• Develop technical proposals and budgets for donors, and prepare timely reports and updates;

• Lead nutrition program implementation, including staff recruitment and training, workplan development, procurement and inventory planning, and budget management;

• Establish program monitoring systems; ensure consistent reporting and analysis of results to improve program quality;

• Ensure compliance with IRC policy and procedures throughout the program team and activities;

• Represent the IRC, coordinating with other agencies, local government , donors, cluster and other partners;

• Provide a comprehensive handover to successor at the end of deployments;

• Create an inclusive environment where diversity, different work styles, personalities and approaches are valued, and prioritize capacity building of team;

• Model inclusive behaviors to team members (ensuring all members’ voices are heard); acknowledges own biases and learning on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion;

• Provide a comprehensive handover to successor.

Job Requirements:

• Master’s/post-graduate degree in Public Health Nutrition/Global Nutrition or equivalent;

• Minimum 3-5 years’ work experience in humanitarian nutrition during emergencies at the coordinator level or above required;

• Experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of community-based management of acute malnutrition, and infant and young child feeding programs;

• Demonstrated technical expertise in surveys and assessments, particularly SMART, IYCF and the Semi-Quantitative Evaluation of Access and Coverage (SQUEAC) assessment a plus;

• Effective leading and building programs and/or operations in fast-paced, multifaceted environments. Leadership and team management skills are important;

• Solid track record leading in an emergency environment and/or start-up environment as part of a multinational team, as well as resource mobilization for health emergencies;

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate technical information in a clear manner;

• Fluency in English. Working knowledge of Arabic, French and/or Spanish strongly preferred;

• Digital literacy: MS Word, Excel & email applications required; MS Access, Project & GIS preferred;

• Excellent writing and editing skills, and can effectively write and edit grant proposals and reports;

• Effective people- and program-management skills in acute emergency contexts: can train and lead staff productively under stressful circumstances;

• Flexible, focused, and reliable in an environment of changing demands.
