With a focus on its three core values of collaboration, commitment and care, the business delivers construction, civil engineering and fit-out projects and provides facilities management services to public and private clients in sectors including healthcare, education, defence, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, retail, sports venues, transport infrastructure, environmental, marine, commercial and leisure.Our recent appointment to the SCAPE Utilities works and Service Framework for up to the next eight years has led us to seek a new senior appointment to help grow and expand our Civil Engineering and Construction Businesses in the Utilities Sector across the UK. To facilitate this we are seeking to recruit an experienced Head of Business Development – Utilities for the Utilities Works and Services sector.ResponsibilitiesAs Head of Business Development – Utilities you must be proactive in your approach and able to work independently. You will be responsible for setting our strategy, leading efforts to establish and retain business growth opportunities, obtaining new clients and fostering business relationships to increase market growth.You will be required to possess experience in some or all the Utilities sectors including Energy, Aviation, Ports and Harbours, Transport, Renewables, Telecoms, Communications, and Water.The Head of Business Development – Utilities will report to our Framework Director with links to our Business Development and technical teams and work across the Construction and Civils Engineering departments.The Head of Business Development – Utilities will also be responsible for the following:

  • Being a proactive member of the Framework team and adopting the values of McLaughlin & Harvey
  • Working with the wider team to produce a strategy and evolve as necessary
  • Attending company BD updates and presenting progress
  • Meeting our framework clients and liaising on pipeline opportunities and providing reports as necessary
  • Creating development plans and growth projections, updating and monitoring these on a weekly basis
  • Identifying market opportunities through research, meetings, networking and other channels
  • Arranging meetings with existing and potential clients
  • Raising the company profile by attending and organising events such as exhibitions conferences and hospitality events
  • Updating our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system following every meeting and ensuring this live document is maintained
  • Working with our in-house marketing team to assist in providing both hard and virtual media content to clients and consultants
  • Working in tandem with our Responsible Business team to assist in promoting the work being undertaken
  • Preparing presentations for internal and external meetings
  • Participating in meetings and organising meetings/introductions for other senior management
  • Producing reports for management monthly quarterly and annually
  • Maintaining relationships with staff and keeping up-to-date on their work progress
  • Writing reports and analysing relevant business data
  • Presenting findings to the team and executive members of staff
  • Possessing an awareness of market trends and competitors
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations and laws of business development
  • Maintaining a positive attitude that inspires co-workers and clients to grow the business

QualificationsDesirable

  • Degree Qualified or equivalent Property/Construction/Civils related professional Qualification

ExperienceEssential

  • Experience of working in a similar role with knowledge of the Civil Engineering/ Construction market
  • Experience of working with Utilities Sector clients and the use of Frameworks
  • A wide range of Construction contacts in both client and consultancy
  • Good IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft programmes, in particular: PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • A self-starter who has the ability to grow long term relationships.

Desirable

  • Links to Utilities sector and associated government bodies
  • Knowledge and experience of Utilities Regulations
  • Experience of utilising CRM systems
