Head of Division, People and Culture Team

Job Purpose

Lead initiatives to ensure the organisation lives its core values and drives change aligned to its strategy. Facilitate Institutional change, establishes effective structures and processes, and oversees human resources and related support functions. Drive and oversee process, policies, systems, and procedures for the Unit of People, Conferences and Logistics & Administration to provide an inclusive, fair, safe and inspiring working environment where colleagues are empowered, trusted and valued.

Key responsibilities

  1. Lead the implementation of the institutional development pillar of the GICHD strategy by prioritizing, driving, and monitoring an array of people-focused change initiatives.
  2. Cultivate a high-performance, high-engagement and positive work culture characterized by core values of trust, respect, inclusion, accountability, learning and innovation.
  3. Integrate ongoing initiatives such as gender, diversity & inclusion, environmental stewardship, and safeguarding into the strategic change process.
  4. Manage, optimize and provide strategic direction, inspire and drive continuous improvement for the People and Culture Division.
  5. Lead, coach and develop the Division’s staff, striving for an entrepreneurial culture and cost-effectiveness. Foster a collaborative, respectful by displaying and role modeling the values to enable a positive work environment through diversity, inclusiveness and the achievement of results.
  6. Lead innovative, effective, and efficiently run People and Culture Division to sustain operational excellence trough a data-driven approach by analysing and interpreting trends to develop hypotheses and surface insights to inform further change.
  7. Align people and institutional objectives, steering key improvement initiatives such as employee engagement, performance and talent management, learning programs, leadership development, retention, compensation, and global mobility.
  8. Ensure the Conference Unit has the relevant ressources and tools in place guaranteeing the highest standards of the sector. Promote and represent the GICHD by influencing the EORR sector’s response to a constantly changing policy and operational landscape.
  9. Serve as trusted advisor and partner to management board peers, functioning as an expert on people and organisational issues and providing guidance on managing complex employee relations matters.
  10. Manage and forecast the Division’s financial aspects by mobilizing resources and appropriate budgeting in compliance with internal rules and procedures.
  11. Contribute to the Management Board by driving innovative critical thinking and entrepreneurial spirit to the strategic decisions of the Centre and the sector.

Qualification and professional experience

  • Master’s degree in organisation development or similar
  • Minimum of 10 years of previous relevant work experience in the humanitarian and development sector.

Knowledge, skills and competencies

  • Progressive leadership experience, with proven experience leading a people and culture function.
  • Successful record of leading organisational change.
  • Deep functional expertise across organisational development, talent management, and human resources operations in an organisation that recruits internationally
  • Enthusiasm for collaborating to manage projects and solve problems
  • Established ability to provide guidance and influence across levels
  • Proven change agent with confidence to assume a leadership role in an evolving environment
  • Expert facilitation and coaching skills
  • Broad knowledge of Swiss labor laws and practices
  • Fluency in English, both written and oral; fluency in French highly recommended

  • Internal stakeholders, partners, suppliers, consultants
  • Coordination with other organizations housed in the Maison de la Paix
  • Network of peers from international organisations and companies
  • Local and federal authorities

Travel requirements

  • May be required to travel occasionally.

Salary information

Please note that the salary level for this role is CHF 160’949.- yearly gross, subject to social security deductions and income tax. The GICHD applies a progressive salary scheme The compensation policy is currently under review and is subject to change. This is an open-ended contract.
