Position Summary

HIM specialists organize and maintain health information both in paper files and in electronic systems. They check data for accuracy, assign codes for insurance reimbursement, record information and keep file folders and electronic databases up to date. Some of the data they manage includes patient information, medical histories, physician exams, test results, treatments and services provided. In addition to their clerical duties, records specialists often consult with health care professionals to make sure information is accurate. They must also follow best practices for security and patient confidentiality.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Organize and manage health information data.
  2. Maintain the medical record. Treatment outcomes. Status to nurse-in-charge.
  3. Responsible for ordering medical supplies according to the department needs.
  4. Able to rotate weekends, holidays, and shifts and center location according to company needs.
  5. Participates in meetings of staff and department meetings.
  6. Shares acquired knowledge and learning.
  7. Consistently reports for duty on time.
  8. Keeps patient’s information private and limits conversation of a personal nature in patient’s presence.
  9. Degree of teamwork and cooperation with personnel from other departments.
  10. Check medical records and follow up obtaining missing results prior to patient’s appointment.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to work standing up, walk, use hands to operate tools and equipment and must be able to exert regularly up to 10 pounds of force, frequently exert 30 pounds of force and occasionally exert 50 pounds of force to constantly perform the essential job functions. The employee will be frequently required to reach with hands and arms, bend, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, and pull. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The worker is subject to noise; there may be sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School Graduate or equivalent
  2. Basic Computer Skills
  3. Customer Service skills and training
  4. Bilingual English/Spanish
  5. 1+ years of experience in the medical field required. No license is required

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Relevant or any other job-related vocational coursework.
