The Health Information Management Specialist makes a professional and courteous lasting impression on patients and families that interact with OakLeaf Surgical Hospital. They are responsible for electronically organizing and maintaining data for collection, storage, analysis, retrieval and reporting while coordinating the flow and exchange of information related to patient accounts and medical records.
Hours:
1.0 FTE: 40 Hours per week
Monday – Friday: 10:00AM – 6:30PM
Essential Job Functions:
Registration and Pre-registration functions to ensure that all information entered into the admitting/registration system is accurate and complete by obtaining copies of appropriate documentation to facilitate the billing and collections process
Coordinate all activities related to customer service at the lobby desk including the following:
Answer, screen and direct all internal and external calls to the appropriate department
Assist nurses and physicians with patient updates to family members throughout the day to ensure positive communication and patient satisfaction.
Promptly notify and room patient’s family members as requested
Collect and log patient payments
Monitor scanned and/or electronic downtime forms to ensure availability when needed
Coordinate all medical record scanning and Indexing which may include the following:
Maintain confidential medical records in an organized and efficient manner
Complete necessary prep work required to documents prior to scanning (examine pages, verify patient identification on each page, review electronic image to confirm image quality and index and organize scanned documents into patients’ electronic medical record)
Complete miscellaneous audits timely and accurately to meet both department and hospital performance improvement goals including auditing medical records after forms transferred to permanent storage to ensure quality, complete, accurate and legible records
Release protected health information per State, Federal and HIPAA guidelines
Perform a variety of medical office related functions
Regular and prompt work-site attendance
Qualifications, Knowledge & Ability:
Medical background working in a healthcare environment required
Preferred Registered Health Information Technician or 5 years medical records experience
Detail oriented, accurate, and capable of working in a fast paced environment
Is aware of professional standards and performs in accordance with them
Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
Ability to relate and work effectively with others
Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards
Knowledge of medical terminology
Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for own professional advancement
