Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Assignment Level II Under general supervision, directs, coordinates, and supports the daily activities and services in an assigned department(s), unit(s), or area of service. In addition to performing the duties of Assignment Level I at a more difficult and responsible level also performs the following:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Overseeing the HIM Coders, which include Inpatient, Ambulatory Surgery, and Emergency
B. Reviews the entire medical record (inpatient discharge, ambulatory surgery, emergency room, or Ambulatory Care) to determine that the coder assigned the appropriate principal diagnosis and procedures, as well as all complications, co-morbidities, and significant procedures.
C. Reviews coded cases to ensure the coder has coded the case appropriately, that the proper DRG was assigned, and that the coder validated all the demographics to ensure accuracy.
D. Review and response to DRG & technical denials.
E. Conduct clinical pertinence and analyze, summarize, generate reports, submit findings to respective services, and follow up their responses.
F. Based on DRG, technical and clinical pertinence denials, and review, conduct in-service to coders and other health care providers.
G. Abstract diagnosis and procedures in 3M 360 system.
H. Enter data flex (abstracting information) as required based on the type of chart.
I. Run the DRG group on inpatient stays.
J. Review cases on PCS hold for appropriateness of DRG assignment and release to billing after review.
K. Provide in-service to the Coder, CDI, and providers on coding guidelines and accurate documentation.
L. Follows HIM safety and disaster programs.
M. Understands and is familiar with the QI Plan.
N. Assist medical staff in documentation of principal/secondary diagnosis and procedure.
O. Participation in concurrent and retrospective chart review
P. Generate reports for use by administration or other requestor concerning case mix.
Q. Performs other duties assigned by the supervisor.
R. Other relative duties:
- Promote a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace, which enhances and furthers the Mission, Vision, and Value Statement.
- Meet all compliance standards/requirements such as Annual In-service training, physical evaluation/assessment, Work Violent, Fire Drill Participation, etc.
- Participate in Performance Improvement activities.
- Responsible for wearing professional attire to the workplace as well as during off-site work when conducting business on behalf of the Northern Manhattan Network.
- Must exhibit flexibility within the Northern Manhattan Network as it pertains to work assignment, workplace, site designation, and Tour of Duty.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential from AHIMA and two (2) years of satisfactory experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, of which one (1) year has been in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity; or
2. Possession of a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential from AHIMA and four (4) years of satisfactory experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, of which two (2) years have been in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity; or
3. Possession of a valid certificate as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from AHIMA and six (6) years of satisfactory experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, of which three (3) years have been in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity; or
4. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.
