Histology Technician

Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation and analysis by a Pathologist. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.Works under the supervision of the Administrative Director of Clinical Laboratory, Pathologist, Senior Histology Technician, Cytotechnologist or designee who reviews work for accuracy.

1. Participates in development of departmental policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, computer applications, and quality assurance.
2. Receives specimens of tissues from surgical and autopsy cases. Assigns number to specimens to ensure against loss or identification error.
3. Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation and analysis by treating and staining with chemicals (manually or with technique), embedding in paraffin blocks, cutting with microtome, and mounting on glass slide. Labels all slides prepared. Utilizes specialized staining techniques as required.
4. Freezes, cuts, and stains specimens from patients undergoing surgery. Cuts frozen sections of kidney needle biopsies for study by microbiologist.
5. Prepares solutions and stains for routine and special work following established formulas using specialized testing equipment.
6. Maintains assigned equipment, instruments, and work area in orderly condition.
7. Utilizes microscope to identify fungus, bacteria, muscle, collagen, pigments, minerals, and cell products.
8. Files slides and paraffin blocks. Maintains all related records. Checks all specimens to ensure proper identification.
9. Obtains smears from patients. Processes sputum and body fluids for cell blocks.
10. Determines when prescribed techniques and apparatus should be modified to meet special conditions and/or to expedite diagnosis.
11. Guides and directs activities of assigned student assistants.
12. Performs decalcification of bone specimens.

Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college program in clinical histologic technique. Incumbents with two (2) or more years of experience as a histotechnologist will be allocated to level 20.

Registered as a Histotechnologist with the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.

Working knowledge of chemistry, biology and histology.

Working knowledge of standard chemical and histological procedures.

Skill in laboratory manipulative techniques.

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, formulas and charts.

Ability to meet the physical, mental and visual standards of the job.

Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to one’s self, other persons, and equipment.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, physicians, co-workers and other Medical Center personnel.
