Job Description

The Department of Management (DOM), Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking an Information Technology Specialist 4 to join our team!

This role will be responsible for providing high-quality IT customer support, troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues, and managing system upgrades for various agencies. This position will require a proactive approach to managing IT resources, maintaining workstation performance, coordinating system upgrades, and ensuring the security and functionality of our IT systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • IT Customer Support
  1. Serve as the primary contact for help desk support across various agencies.
  2. Provide timely and accurate troubleshooting for complex technical issues related to laptops, network, servers, and VM environments.
  3. Offer solutions and recommendations to resolve user complaints and develop strategies to prevent future issues.
  • System Management and Maintenance
  1. Research, test, configure, implement, and maintain system upgrades, including desktops, laptops, networks, servers, virtual machines (VM), cloud resources, and IoT systems.
  2. Design and implement system enhancements and ongoing maintenance to improve efficiency and performance.
  • Workstation Administration
  1. Administer workstations across the agency, ensuring proper configuration and software installation.
  2. Create, maintain, and distribute desktop and laptop images, ensuring timely and effective workstation deployment.
  3. Troubleshoot workstation performance and recommend/revise technology to improve functionality.
  • Documentation and Training
  1. Create and maintain clear, concise system documentation to support issue resolution and improve user understanding.
  2. Develop and deliver IT training sessions for individuals or groups, as needed, to enhance system usage and understanding.
  • System Security and Resource Management
  1. Coordinate system resources, manage network security, and ensure the proper configuration of security measures (firewalls, anti-virus, intrusion detection, etc.).
  2. Ensure the timely application of system-wide security patches and perform ongoing maintenance on system and network infrastructure.
  3. Collaborate with third-party vendors to resolve technical issues and support system requirements.
  • Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery
  1. Coordinate the availability and allocation of system resources, supporting business continuity and disaster recovery efforts.

Please note, candidates for this position must reside 

in the state of Iowa at the time of starting the role.

Background Check Requirements:

  • After a conditional offer of employment has been made, and as the final step in the hiring process, candidates for this position will be subject to a background investigation, which may include but may not be limited to a verification of a candidate’s education, previous employment/work history, contact of personal references, motor vehicle records, and a criminal history check (including through Federal, State, or Local criminal justice agencies).
  • Information gathered as part of such background investigation will be treated as confidential to the extent permitted by Iowa Code section 22.7, 8B.4A, and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations; provided that, to the extent permitted by applicable law, such information shall be available to candidates upon request.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and experience equal to two years of full-time work: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating and coordinating computer based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/ delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; or designing/administering Internet sites;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the completion of an approved curriculum/specialized training program developed and implemented by or in cooperation with state government; or eighteen semester hours of accredited post high school course work in one of the specialty areas listed above; or certification by an authorized educational institution/major computer or software producer in an area directly related to one of the specialty areas listed above, for the required education;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the required experience for thirty semester hours of the required education;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to six months of full-time work as an Information Technology Specialist 3.
