Job Description

The Department of Management (DOM), Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking an Information Technology Specialist 5 – Server Administrator to join our team!

This role plays a vital part in supporting and maintaining our IT infrastructure, ensuring the seamless operation of our systems while leading system projects, troubleshooting, and mentoring technical staff. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in server administration, system security, data storage management, and enterprise-level IT solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Operations Administration
  1. Monitor daily operations of Microsoft Exchange and Office 365 servers, including user support, server maintenance, data migrations, backups, and deployments.
  2. Lead system operation administration projects, perform evaluations of potential changes, and provide estimates for completion.
  3. Analyze current resources to plan for long-term server expansion and performance optimization.
  4. Interact with helpdesk staff, software vendors, and management to provide support and guidance.
  5. Install and maintain Microsoft messaging systems and manage system outages in coordination with DOM DoIT.
  6. Provide feedback on hardware procurement and collaborate on system development, implementation, and upgrades.
  7. Troubleshoot server and software issues, develop training for staff, and ensure efficient system operations.
  8. Create documentation, scripts, and processes to resolve future system issues and ensure consistency across accounts.
  • Data Storage Administration
  1. Manage and administer the department’s Network Attached Storage (NAS) for unstructured data and evidentiary video.
  2. Oversee EMC Cohesity and Data Domain Backup and Recovery systems, ensuring all on-premise servers are backed up.
  3. Administer Cisco USC/Hyperflex Storage Arrays used for VMware virtual servers.
  4. Perform regular maintenance, patching, and upgrades on storage hardware and software.
  5. Evaluate and recommend new storage solutions to improve department performance and efficiency.
  6. Manage cloud storage, particularly for preserving digital evidence in AWS.
  • Security Administration
  1. Create and manage Microsoft enterprise group policies, ensuring the security and performance of systems across the network.
  2. Administer Microsoft Active Directory Federated Services (ADFS) for single sign-on access to critical systems such as PowerDMS and Office 365.
  3. Oversee Bitlocker encryption services for mobile laptops and tablets, ensuring data security.
  4. Enforce compliance with the State of Iowa, FBI CJIS, and Department of Public Safety security policies.
  5. Contribute to disaster recovery planning and provide input on departmental IT policies.
  • Additional Duties
  1. Serve as a project manager for various IT projects across the department.
  2. Provide second-level support for the department’s PC Help Desk, including troubleshooting desktops, laptops, and other devices.
  3. Participate in after-hours support rotation for system operations, networking, security, or server issues.
  4. Collaborate with the Professional Standards Bureau on investigations and open records requests.
  5. Operate a state vehicle as required for work responsibilities.

in the state of Iowa at the time of starting the role.

Background Check Requirements:

  • After a conditional offer of employment has been made, and as the final step in the hiring process, candidates for this position will be subject to a background investigation, which may include but may not be limited to a verification of a candidate’s education, previous employment/work history, contact of personal references, motor vehicle records, and a criminal history check (including through Federal, State, or Local criminal justice agencies).
  • Information gathered as part of such background investigation will be treated as confidential to the extent permitted by Iowa Code section 22.7, 8B.4A, and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations; provided that, to the extent permitted by applicable law, such information shall be available to candidates upon request.
  • Pass background investigation conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; designing/administering websites; or executing technology projects (e.g., systems analysis, requirements, design, development, and testing).

2) All of the following (a and b):

a. Three years of full-time work experience in: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; designing/administering websites; or executing technology projects (e.g., systems analysis, requirements, design, development, and testing); and

b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.

3) All of the following (a and b):

a. Three years of full-time work experience in: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; designing/administering websites; or executing technology projects (e.g., systems analysis, requirements, design, development, and testing); and

b. Certification by an authorized educational institution/major computer or software producer in an area directly related to one of the computer specialty fields described in part a.

4) All of the following (a and b):

a. Three years of full-time work experience in: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating, and coordinating computer-based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks, and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; designing/administering websites; or executing technology projects (e.g., systems analysis, requirements, design, development, and testing); and

b. Eighteen semester hours of accredited post-high-school coursework in one of the specialty fields described in part a.

5) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of fulltime work as an Information Technology Specialist 4.
