About the role

The National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), a Department of Imperial College London’s Faculty of Medicine, is a world-renowned research centre that undertakes research, development and education in cardiovascular and respiratory science.

The NHLI seeks to recruit an Institute Manager who will have overarching responsibility for the delivery of all administrative functions in NHLI as well as directly supporting the academic mission through effective liaison with the Head of Department, Professor Barbara Casadei.

The NHLI has approximately 480 staff of whom over 100 are academic. The Institute Manager oversees the education portfolio of over 200 postgraduate students, over 250 PhD students, a turnover of £60M per annum, grant income of £33M per annum and space of approx. 29000 sq. m. This senior administrative role has a focus on strategy, and the management of space, finances, people, risk and Health, Safety and Compliance.

What you would be doing

As Institute Manager you are responsible for driving strategic decision making in the NHLI and resolving complex issues related to funding, staff management, and the provision of facilities and services. Key relationships will be formed with the Head of Institute, the heads of the two academic Divisions, Heads of Section and senior academic and administrative staff in the Faculty of Medicine, as well as partner NHS Trusts.

What we are looking for

  • You should have relevant extensive experience in a university environment with an in depth understanding of the complexities of working in the sector. it would be highly advantageous to have an understanding or knowledge of the NHS, and its interface with the university sector.
  • You should have experience with the development of strategy related to research and financial management.
  • You will have extensive experience of problem solving and working under pressure while coordinating the provision of an effective service.
  • Exceptional people management skills with the ability to influence, negotiate, and motivate are essential, as is the ability to develop strong working relationships with staff at all levels.
  • You will have exceptional communication skills with the ability to be assertive, diplomatic, and engaging.
