What You Can Expect

The Interconnection Specialist Engineer II supports a range of pre-construction development, engineering, and energy market activities across ENGIE North America’s portfolio of utility-scale renewable energy projects in the United States. As a key contributor to the Transmission & Interconnection team, you will work on discrete tasks that enable successful grid integration and support the company’s renewable energy growth strategy.

This role places particular emphasis on grid interconnection, while also contributing to broader aspects of renewable energy development. You will provide technical and strategic insights into large load interconnections, including co-location and behind-the-meter configurations, helping ENGIE navigate evolving transmission opportunities.

What You Will Deliver:

  • Queue Management: Submit and manage PJM and SPP queue applications, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with readiness requirements
  • Study Management: Own engagement across system impact studies, facility, and restudy phases, providing input on assumptions, interpreting results, and assessing upgrade impacts
  • Cost & Schedule Transparency: Prepare executive-ready briefs outlining upgrade allocations (baseline vs. direct-connect), cost risk ranges, and mitigation options
  • Agreement Execution: Support execution of ISA, CSA, and GIA agreements, maintaining clear risk registers through Notice to Proceed (NTP) handoff
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Represent ENGIE in PJM and SPP stakeholder working groups and utility coordination meetings to build trust and ensure alignment

Core Responsibilities:

Pre-screen & Siting

  • Guide early Point of Interconnection (POI) screening with modeling teams, including thermal, voltage, and short-circuit analysis
  • Identify siting risks related to PJM deliverability zones (e.g., EMAAC, COMED, APS, DOM) and SPP congestion areas

Queue Management

  • Lead PJM New Services Queue applications, including data forms, deposit/security requirements, and milestone tracking
  • Manage existing PJM assets, including surplus interconnection strategies
  • Oversee SPP GIQ submissions, ensuring technical accuracy, deposit compliance, and demonstration of site control

Study Process

  • Coordinate PJM Feasibility, SIS, and Facilities studies, and SPP SIS/FS studies with internal modeling teams
  • Interpret study results (thermal overloads, voltage violations, stability issues) and translate findings into upgrade exposure, risk, and mitigation strategies

Deliverability & Capacity

  • Track PJM Capacity Interconnection Rights (CIRs) and assess impacts on Resource Adequacy and offtake positions
  • Evaluate NRIS vs. ERIS options in SPP and their implications for project economics
  • Explore opportunities to leverage SPP’s ERAS process

Agreements & Execution

  • Support negotiation of PJM ISA/CSA and SPP GIA terms, including milestones and security postings
  • Coordinate with Engineering on readiness of substation, relay, telecom, and gen-tie components

Risk Management

  • Maintain upgrade and schedule risk registers
  • Present mitigation strategies such as portfolio routing, alternative POIs, reconfigurations, and provisional arrangements

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Serve as primary external contact with PJM, SPP, Transmission Owners, consultants, and internal teams (Development, Engineering, Origination, Finance)
  • Collaborate with grid and production cost modeling analysts to assess full project impacts
  • Communicate macro-level changes (e.g., queue reforms, transmission projects, retirements, generation additions) to relevant stakeholders
  • Engage utilities in interconnection agreement negotiations, project scheduling, and site acquisition activities

Industry Engagement & Strategic Insight

  • Represent ENGIE in industry advocacy groups
  • Stay informed on national renewable opportunities in the United States and the national industry trends impacting the future of Renewable development opportunities and their competitiveness as they relate to customers

What You’ll Bring

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or closely related technical field, along with at minimum two (2) years experience in utility-scale renewables or transmission & distribution (T&D), including direct ownership of interconnection workstreams. PJM and SPP experience highly preferred
  • Technical proficiency in interpreting and challenging Powerflow results, including consultant work product, and the ability to communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen, with experience translating study results into upgrade cost ranges, contingencies, and mitigation strategies aligned with offtake and Resource Adequacy (RA) requirements
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain constructive relationships across internal teams and external stakeholders, and a high level of attention to detail
  • A collaborative and proactive mindset, with the ability to work independently and constructively within a large, matrixed organization while engaging effectively across cross-functional teams
  • Exceptional project management skills, including the ability to prioritize critical-path activities, and manage multiple workstreams, and operate independently within a large, matrixed organization
  • Desire to advance the adoption and deployment of renewable energy solutions across North America
