Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. This internship position is located in the Donor Relations and Strategic Resource Partnerships Unit, Office of the Executive Director. Donor Relations and Strategic Resource Partnerships unit is responsible for coordinating UN-Habitat’s strategic and operational work on resource mobilization. This includes support for a harmonized decentralized fundraising model, providing tools to help manage and report on non-earmarked income and earmarked contributions, undertaking and supporting donor consultations as well as other activities related to strengthening relations with donors and enhancing predictable funding for UN-Habitat’s work on sustainable urbanization. The Donor Information Platform (DIP), a key initiative of the Unit, utilizes tools like Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, and SharePoint to streamline donor data management, improve collaboration, and support strategic decision-making. The Data Analyst and Information Management Intern will be responsible for supporting the Donor Relations and Strategic Resource Partnerships Unit by maintaining comprehensive donor data, conducting analyses of donor information, improving data management processes and supporting the design and maintenance of an archiving system for donor information and correspondence. The internship is for a minimum duration of six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department of office to which they are assigned. Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the supervision of the OiC of the Donor Relations and Strategic Resource Partnerships Unit, Office of the Executive Director, the intern will: 1. Regularly update database supporting the Donor Information Platform (DIP), ensuring data accuracy and integrating new information from various platforms. Provide support in cleaning and structuring organizational data related to grants and projects to ensure seamless integration into tools. 2. Contribute to the continuous improvement of existing DIP tools by identifying additional user needs and proposing tailored solutions. 3. Automate manual processes for the team and the organization using Power Automate or Python scripting, as needed. This includes developing workflows for repetitive tasks and creating tools to streamline data extraction, analysis and document generation processes. 4. Design and develop Power BI dashboards that integrate advanced data analysis, actionable insights, and impactful visualizations to meet analytical requirements and support organizational decision-making needs.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Computer science, data analytics, software development, information management, data science, or statistics, or other related fields. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Experience in acquiring, validating, cleaning, transforming, and comparing quantitative and qualitative data from different sources is required. Please provide examples of how you have successfully carried out such tasks in your academic or professional experience. Experience in designing and implementing interactive data visualization solutions is required. Have you worked on developing interactive data visualizations? If yes, please provide examples of tools used (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or others) and describe the outcome of your work. Knowledge and skills in automating data-related processes (e.g., using Python, Power Automate, etc.) are desirable. Please describe your proficiency in these tools and provide examples of any automation tasks or projects you have undertaken.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
