Job description
The City of Edmonton’s Residential Transfer Station (RTS) at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) is where Edmontonians can bring household waste and chemicals for safe disposal. As a Labourer ll at the facility, this position applies previous waste transferring experience to provide excellent customer service and ensure the safety of all our visitors.What will you be doing?
- Performs a preliminary review of incoming materials to determine their acceptability, including identifying hazardous waste Assists with unloading and organizing refuse, oversized items, paint, oil, batteries, propane tanks, aerosols etc. into collection areas
- Safely handles and processes a wide range of contaminated and hazardous materials, as well as general refuse and recyclable materials Prepares household hazardous waste for proper disposal and/or transport offsite, including proper containment and manifests
- Prepares chemicals for transport to disposal
- Sorts household waste (HHW), electronic waste (e-waste) and other materials
- Recover refrigerant from refrigerators, freezers, water coolers and air conditioners
- Performs all tasks related to refuse and hazardous waste safely and in accordance with established policies and procedures
- Performs litter control and collection
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Completion of the 10th school grade or equivalent
- 1 year of experience such as in a waste transferring environment with experience in waste and hazardous materials handling and/or customer service or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Skills Required for Success:
- Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of work tasks
- Knowledge of safety and environmental precautions and hazards related to the assigned work
- Ability to learn and use related equipment and tools, including but not limited to telehandler, toolcat and hand/power tools
- Ability to screen waste materials, including assessing the type of waste and the level of hazard
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instruction
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with the public, coworkers and contractors
- Ability to succeed independently or as part of a team
- Ability to maintain basic records
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labour for extended periods of time in various weather and environmental conditions, including bending, lifting, standing, shoveling, etc
- WHMIS and TDG is an asset

- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
