Job Summary

In the framework of the Norwegian Cultural Orientation Programme (NORCO), the Directorate for Integration and Diversity (IMDi) has requested the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to pilot a project aimed at delivering PDO sessions to children aged 5 to 10 years.

Previously, children aged 5 to 7 were supervised by child caregivers while their parents and older siblings (aged 8 and above) participated in PDO sessions. In response to IMDi’s request, IOM is developing tailored content and methodology specifically designed for this younger age group. This newly developed approach will be implemented during the pilot phase of the PDO sessions.

The primary objective of this pilot initiative is to inform and prepare children for their resettlement in Norway. The sessions will introduce them to key aspects of Norwegian society, including the education system, cultural norms, and the experience of being a child in Norway.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks to be performed under this contract

Consultant will be hired to assist to deliver PDO sessions to children age between 5 to 10. The PDO will be delivered to Norway-bound quota refugees in their country of residence prior to their departure.

The consultant will be called a Cross Cultural Facilitator (CCF) and must attend at least two weeks in-house training that includes teaching content, methodologies, and process on Norwegian resettlement and integration before going on field missions.
During engagement with IOM as a CCF, responsibilities will include:

• Providing orientation sessions for Norway bound quota refugees age 5 to 10 living in their in the first country of asylum, or a transit country.
• Providing basic information about Norwegian society, including the education system, cultural norms, and the experience of being a child in Norway, as detailed in IOM’s PDO curriculum for children.
• Preparing participants for the Norwegian kindergarten and primary school environment through engaging them with activities and teaching methods common in the Norwegian school system.

Performance indicators for the evaluation of results

• Professional communication with IOM Norway office.
• Delivering results within the agreed Terms of Reference.
• On time submission of reports and all other deliverables.

Required Qualifications

Experience

• Professional competence in teaching children, preferably experiences from Norwegian kindergarten and/or primary school.
• Understanding of Norwegian life and society through practical experience.
• Previous experience related to the integration of refugee or migrant children in Norway.

Skills

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, tailored to engaging and educating children.
• Strong awareness of cultural differences and sensitivity towards diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
• Proficient in computer literacy, utilizing educational technologies to enhance learning experiences.

Languages

• Norwegian and English languages required.
• Fluency in Sudanese Arabic, Dari, or Turkish language is an advantage.

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Travel required

Travel is required including to Oslo for training, and internationally as the PDO will be delivered in the first country of asylum, or a transit country.
