Itinerant Teacher/Bilingual Special Education

Provide students served through both bilingual and special education programs with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to allow students to access enrolled grade level curriculum.

1. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the District’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
2. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles and include crosslinguistic practices to bridge the languages.
3. Produce and/or translate instructional resources to support the state of Texas Spanish Language Arts curriculum and the CISD’s One-Way Dual Language Bilingual Program model.
4. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, Board policies, and administrative regulations.
5. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
6. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
7. Work cooperatively with general education and special education teachers to modify/accommodate curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
8. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to District requirements.
9. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
10. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
11. Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
12. Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by the IEP.
13. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned, adhering to the District’s philosophy of instruction.
14. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
15. Facilitate teachers’ understanding and awareness of appropriate techniques and methodologies benefiting bilingual students.
16. Assist teachers with implementation of accommodations recommended for success in the classroom environment.
17. Monitor identified special education students for continued progress on IEPs.
18. Collaborate with teachers and appraisal personnel in the development of IEPs.
19. Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials that best meet the needs of students served through both bilingual and special education.
20. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
21. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
22. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned.
23. Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the District.
24. Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook and IEP.
25. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
26. Establish and maintain open of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
27. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
28. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
29. Maintain confidentiality of information.
30. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
31. Keep informed of and comply with State, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
32. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
33. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
34. Regular attendance.
35. Other duties assigned.

ASSIGNMENTS TO VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION:

1. Seamlessly integrate District-approved online learning platforms and required software into the planning, delivery, and support of virtual instruction.
2. Plan, prepare, implement, and evaluate lessons and activities during the standard work hours of the campus at which the teacher is assigned, as well as prolonged or irregular hours.
3. Be able to communicate with students, parents, and campus and District personnel during the standard work hours of the campus at which the teacher is assigned, as well as prolonged or irregular hours.
4. Adhere to all professional responsibilities and deadlines including professional communication and responsiveness.
5. Be flexible, responsive, and positive with students, parents, and staff.
6. Effectively translate CISD Best Practices into the virtual instructional setting.
7. Regularly attend and apply District-approved professional development in the most up-to-date practices associated with virtual instruction.
8. Accurately and timely obtain and report required student data, including attendance, grades, etc.
9. Dress professionally as you would if you were offering instruction to students in a traditional, in-person setting.
10. Teach and interact with students from a quiet space, free from distraction, where appropriate confidentiality rules can be followed.
11. Create a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
12. Provide small group and tutoring opportunities for students who are experiencing difficulty in their learning.
13. Support any extracurricular activities for which you are responsible according to District guidelines.
14. Attend all required campus and District meetings.

Education/Certification:

• Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
• Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assigned to include bilingual and special education certifications

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Knowledge of subjects assigned
• General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
• General knowledge of second language acquisition and crosslinguistic instructional practices
• Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to fluently communicate (i.e. speak, read and write) in Spanish
• Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation.
• Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
• Training in strategies for positive behavioral supports
• Outstanding interpersonal skills to work with multiple departments and numerous campuses

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional prolonged and/or irregular hours. Frequent and prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting). Frequent walking. May require heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment.
