Salary Schedule

Other Conditions: To begin approximately October 2024 or soon thereafter. Annual renewal is dependent upon availability of funds and/or satisfactory performance.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Develops and facilitates an extension program to promote and support agroforestry practices; which may include implementing extension education program activities; and reporting project outcomes, impacts and results to clientele and administration.
  • Collaborates with community leaders to plan and schedule project activities related to the installation and maintenance of community agroforestry.
  • Coordinates with the University of Hawai?i fiscal staff to execute contracts, manage project budgets, and facilitate necessary purchases and reimbursements.
  • Works closely with Site Coordinators to ensure timely execution of agroforestry installation and maintenance activities.
  • Supports, conducts, and/or coordinates educational programs aimed at promoting agroforestry practices within the community.
  • Provides support, conduct, and/or coordinate technical assistance sessions and tree giveaways to support community members in adopting agroforestry techniques.
  • Tracks project supplies and expenditures to ensure efficient use of resources and adherence to budgetary guidelines.
  • Documents project activities, outcomes, and lessons learned; communicate project progress and achievements to stakeholders and funders.
  • Travels within East Hawai?i Island and potentially across the state to collaborate with other agroforestry initiatives and share best practices.
  • Fosters positive relationships with community associations, partners, and stakeholders to enhance project impact and sustainability.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders which may involve meetings that occur after normal working hours and/or on weekends at off-site locations.
  • Obtains local, regional, and national funding to establish a program that addresses industry needs.
  • Conducts and participate in activities that would result in the development and publication of scholarly information that address clientele needs through appropriate media methods, such as hard copy publications, web-based publications, social media, and other communication and media alternatives.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing, in agriculture, natural resource management, cultural anthropology, science education or related area.
  2. Minimum three years of experience in program administration.
  3. Minimum five years of experience in science and/or cultural education and/or outreach
  4. Ability to apply Extension teaching methods.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in working with local, Native Hawaiian, and/or other underserved communities as it pertains to areas related to community resource management, traditional ecological knowledge, and/or Indigenous science.
  6. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai’i Driver’s License (class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation that meets position needs.
  7. Must be able to communicate efficiently in both written and oral media, including PowerPoints, written reports, and quantitative/fiscal spreadsheets.
  8. Must be able to conduct fieldwork under variable environmental conditions (e.g., heat, rain, cold temperatures, and poor footing) for up to eight (8) hours per day.
  9. Ability to carry material weighing up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in agriculture, natural resource management, or other related field.
  2. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional educational tools.
  3. Experience working with community-based natural resource management, Native Hawaiian culture, and/or Native Hawaiian plants.
  4. Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding or other in-kind program resources.
  5. Experience with developing educational materials for websites and using social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for educational purposes.
  6. Familiarity with the unique agroforestry systems/types in Hawai‘i
  7. Working knowledge and understanding of Hawaiian culture, agriculture, and/or language.
  8. Previous work experience in cooperative extension or cultural science education.
