This position is located in the Official Documents Chinese Translation Unit (OFFDOC/C) within the Official Meetings, Documents and Relations Department (RELMEETINGS). There are seven language units in the RELMEETINGS that provide language services in the ILO official languages (English, French and Spanish) and in the ILO working languages (Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German).

The OFFDOC/C Unit is responsible for the editing, translation, revision and text processing of selected official ILO documents, including those submitted to the International Labour Conference, the Governing Body and Regional Meetings, as well as documents produced by the Office of the Director-General.

The incumbent of the position undertakes translation work and participates in terminology and other related work.

The incumbent will report directly to the Head of the Chinese Translation Unit.

Specific Duties:

  • Subject to revision, translate from English into Chinese a variety of documents on a wide range of technical and administrative subjects. Translate, as appropriate and without revision, certain general and standard documents, which do not involve complex, technical or sensitive matters.
  • Subject to revision and as required, translate from Chinese into English Chinese-language documents, including articles 19 and 22 reports, as well as official correspondence that the ILO receives from its Chinese constituents.
  • Review documents in Chinese for adherence to the established editorial standards and conformity with the linguistic policies and practices, including readability, consistency, acronyms, spelling, syntax, punctuation and grammar.
  • Post-edit speech to text transcriptions or automated translations, as required.
  • Provide senior translators/revisers with relevant referencing materials, including background documents, direct quotations, specific terms, and previously translated contents as retrieved from the ILO’s computer-assisted translation and terminology (CATT) tool, to facilitate the translation/revision process.
  • Carry out linguistic and terminology research and help prepare glossaries. Monitor and identify variations and evolutions in the usage of terms. Maintain the Chinese term base by updating, introducing, merging and cleaning terminology entries. Collect and compile important new concepts and notions in respect of the world of work within the UN system.
  • Assist the Head of Unit with the preparation and organization of the Unit’s work. Prepare output statistics of the Unit and assist the planning process. Prepare meeting notes and follow up as appropriate.
  • Assist the Head of Unit in recruiting external collaborators and interns and providing them with information on language house-style, document processing techniques, CATT tools and other work-related requirements.
  • Follow technical developments in translation and linguistic services, including in CATT tools on the market for the Chinese language as well as those used by other international organizations. Take an initiative in the introduction of new technology to the Unit.
  • Provide inputs to, and update instructions and guidelines for, the preparation of documents and templates in the Chinese language and follow up with responsible IT staff to ensure that these templates are modified or updated in a timely manner.
  • Perform any other relevant duties as assigned.

Required qualifications:

Education:

  • First-level university degree Bachelor’s or equivalent in languages or other relevant fields. 

Experience:

  • At least three years of professional translation experience. 

Languages:

  • Excellent command of Chinese, and good command of English.  A working knowledge of French or of other ILO official or working languages (Spanish, Arabic, German and Russian) would be an advantage.
