Job Description:

• The duties specified below are representative of the nature and level of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions.
• Make field observations at sample collection points; record data and main tain field notes.
• Set up, calibrate, operate, and perform minor maintenance and repair on a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments; perform required safety and calibration checks of equipment and instruments; clean, wash, and assemble all laboratory apparatus and glassware; maintain the laboratory in a safe and clean condition.
• Collect influent, effluent, and turnout water samples from specified locations on a daily basis; make nonroutine sample collections as requested; conduct routine field tests on samples and/or prepare samples for storage and transportation.
• Conduct routine physical, chemical, and bacteriological analysis of samples.
• Prepare standard chemical solutions, reagents, stains, and bacteriological media for use in testing water quality; ensure adequate supply of standard media solutions.
• Compile and record data onto work sheets, logs, and forms; enter and retrieve data from the laboratory database and prepare various reports.
• Ensure adherence to safe work practices; maintain safety procedures and binders; ensure proper disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals.
• Assist chemists and other laboratory staff with specialized research projects.
• Assist in maintaining an inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
• Prepare field sampling kits.
• Employees have a responsibility for safety; for following safety regulations and safety policies and procedures applicable to their work.
• Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them by their supervisors or by law.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications:

• Methods and techniques of preparing standard media solutions.
• Principles of chemistry and bacteriology as applied to the analysis of water.
• Standard laboratory terminology and procedures.
• Use and care of standard laboratory equipment, instruments, and materials.
• Mathematical principles.
• Principles and procedures of recordkeeping.
• Principles of business writing and report preparation.

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. experience

• Two (2) years of chemical, biological, or bacteriological laboratory experience.
• Twelve (12) semester units of college level course work in physical, natural, or earth sciences may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
