NY HELPS* appointment: To be eligible for a NY HELPS appointment, the candidate must have:
Laboratory Specialist Trainee 1: A bachelor’s or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science.
Laboratory Specialist Trainee 2: A bachelor’s or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science AND one year of experience using a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment; coordinating laboratory testing and research activities; and/or directing specialized laboratory programs.
Laboratory Specialist 1: A bachelor’s or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science AND two years of experience using a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment; coordinating laboratory testing and research activities; and/or directing specialized laboratory programs.
Preferred Qualifications: Laboratory experience with environmental sample preparation techniques including liquid-liquid and solid phase extraction. Strong organizational and record keeping skills with attention to detail.
The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description The incumbent in this position is responsible for support activities within the Laboratory of Organic Analytical Chemistry. Specific duties include the preparation and extraction of drinking water samples by prescribed methods and following standard operating procedures for the analysis of organic contaminants. Other general laboratory duties include glassware washing, standard and reagent preparation, and disposal of chemical waste. This employee may also assist in preparing sampling kits, receiving environmental samples, and logging the samples into the laboratory information management system.

This position is part of the NYS HELPS program. No examination is required.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
