Salary Range:

  • Land Surveyor I : B21 $54,278 – $81,351
  • Land Surveyor II : B23 $61,184 – $99,658
  • Land Surveyor III : B25 $69,572 – $114,099

Position Description

Leads multiple Department survey parties or oversees contracted survey parties for the purpose of determining boundaries and topography of real property or oversees the compilation, update and maintenance of real property maps; provides analysis and technical assistance, support, coordination and advice for the development, implementation and maintenance of land surveying-related information technology/systems (ITS/IS) and applications to include global positioning and geographic information systems (GPS/GIS). Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Land Surveyor I

  • Coordinates surveying consultant’s contracts
  • Identifies and defines parcels for use in transportation projects by using relevant elements of surveying, property description writing, mapping, law, research, measurement, analysis and computation.
  • Performs drafting and/or design work
  • Trains and instructs other survey personnel
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Land Surveyor II – performs all of the above duties and

  • Reviews completed surveys to ensure accuracy and adherence to required specifications
  • May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage

Land Surveyor III – performs all of the above duties and

  • Develops guidelines, procedures and policies for district surveying activities
  • Reviews district and consultant survey procedures for compliance with department, state, and federal standards.
  • Serves as liaison between TxDOT management, design staff and department or consultant survey crews.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education. 

Experience:

  • Land Surveyor I : 3 years land surveying experience.
  • Land Surveyor II : 4 years land surveying experience.
  • Land Surveyor III : 5 years land surveying experience.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). 

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • State of Texas as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)*
  • Must be registered by the State of Texas as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS). Land Surveyors registered in another state, but not currently registered in the State of Texas, must meet the registration requirements of the Rules and Regulations of the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying, regulating the practice of land surveying. If application is filed after January 1, 2003, have earned a bachelor´s degree from an accredited institution of higher education that included at least 32 semester hours in a combination of courses acceptable to the board in: civil engineering; land surveying; mathematics; photogrammetry; forestry; land law; or the physical sciences.

Preferred Qualifications:

Land Surveyor I

  • Researching, analyzing, and interpreting policies and state and federal laws and regulations specific to functional area
  • Using surveying tools, equipment and instruments
  • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines
  • Monitoring the status and progress of projects
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems

Land Surveyor II – all of the above and

  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments

Land Surveyor III – all of the above and

  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Leading projects and project teams

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks; long distance/from one work site to another
  • Talking-expressingor exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
