Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.About the Team:The University of Edinburgh has been delivering social work education since 1918 – the oldest continuing social work programme in Scotland, and second only to the University of Birmingham in the wider UK.Social Work at Edinburgh has been a world leader in research and writing about the discipline of social work since its early beginnings. Located in the School of Social and Political Science, we currently host 11 academics and two administrative staff. Over the last year, a number of events and research projects that celebrate have been planned for 2017/18. This is an opportunity not only to draw attention to the achievements of previous eras, but also to refocus our energies as we move forward into a new local and global context.Social Work currently provides a range of educational opportunities for both intending and qualified social workers, at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Teaching and learning is a major priority for us, because our students will become the next generation of social work practitioners, and because we also retain our connections with former students once they are in practice, through continuing professional development, student supervision, knowledge exchange partnerships and practitioner research support. The University of Edinburgh has championed the use of innovative learning methods for over 20 years, demonstrated in our use of Enquiry and Action Learning, online learning and research-led teaching. We have a wide-ranging research profile, reflecting the academic and professional background of the academic staff. The taught Master’s and BSc (Social Work) programmes benefit from this research, and it enhances the support of postgraduate research students. Social Work at the University of Edinburgh is one of the highest rated centres of research in the UK. In the most recent Research Assessment Framework (REF 2014), our joint submission – Social Work & Social Policy – was rated 3rd in the UK for its quality and breadth of research. In addition to its 3rd place ranking using the respected Research Fortnight “Power Index”, the alternate Times Higher Education “research power” index ranked Social Work & Social Policy as 1st in the UK. This UK-wide assessment of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has also reported the following excellent assessment of Social Work & Social Policy research at Edinburgh: 81% was identified as being “world leading” or “internationally excellent”; 56% of the wider societal and economic impacts derived from the research were assessed as “outstanding”; 100% of the research was judged to be “world-leading”; 65% of our research activity was rated 4* or 3* in terms of originality, significance and rigour. We were ranked top Scottish university, and 7th UK-wide, based on both average grades, and the proportion of 4* research. We pay particular attention to knowledge exchange and the importance of research for policy making and practice development. Much of our research starts from the premise that social work can make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities. As social work academics, our role is not only producing research and pursuing scholarship, but also encouraging the use of research in practice. We conduct a large amount of our research in Scotland, reflecting our core interest in legislation, policy and practice here, and we also have a commitment to research in the global arena. This wider approach is also demonstrated by the research that is carried out by our thriving community of PhD students, many of whom were employed in social work in the statutory and voluntary sectors before becoming students again.Find out more at www.socialwork.ed.ac.uk
