Lecturer, Special Education (Deaf/Hard of Hearing) (Part-Time) (Career-Track) (C

The Department of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies (DPS) located in the College of Education (COE) at the University of Arizona invites applications for a grant-funded, part-time (0.5 FTE), career-track Lecturer to support grant project activities and supervise graduate students in the Special Education-Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) program during their field experiences. This position is funded through an Office of Special Education Personnel Preparation grant. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team in continuing to grow and develop this fully online program that is committed to preparing teachers of deaf/hard of hearing students within a variety of careers, including: early interventionist, preschool teacher, K-12 classroom/resource teacher, and PK-12 itinerant teacher.

The successful candidate will have the ability to assist with grant project coordination, evaluation, and implementation, as well as supervise scholars in their field experiences and/or teach courses within the program. In addition, the successful candidate will have knowledge of current trends and best practices in supporting non-traditional students and adult learners, a commitment to excellence in teaching and service, and the ability to guide students in the learning process toward achievement of educator proficiency and state teaching certification.

We seek an individual with an ability to assist in the day-to-day management of grant operations; work collaboratively with colleagues and grant scholars in the program; communicate effectively through spoken or written English and American Sign Language (ASL); supervise and support students remotely through online technology, and develop instructional materials.

In addition, the successful candidate will have experience in teacher supervision at the educator preparation or practitioner level.

This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.

• Supervise teacher candidates in their field experiences.
• Assist teacher candidates with making field experience arrangements, including the development of field placement agreements as needed.
• Teach, or assist in teaching, program courses (undergraduate and graduate).
• Produce and contribute to documents related to grant and field experience requirements.
• Foster a positive learning environment for students.
• Maintain regular office hours.
• Implement course changes necessary to maintain accreditation and assessment standards.
• Participate in department and program events and meetings.
• Establish and maintain a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.
• Contribute to community, departmental, college, university, and discipline-specific service activities.
• Support program recruitment efforts.
• Grant-specific duties: RAD-ECDE: assist in the development and implementation of grant-related activities; coordinate, implement, and disseminate grant-related research activities; and contribute to documents related to grant evaluations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Master’s degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field.
• Minimum of three years of experience supervising preservice or in-service teachers in a general education setting and/or school for the deaf.
• American Sign Language fluency, as demonstrated by ASLPI (level 4 or higher), SLPI:ASL (Advanced/Advanced Plus or higher), or EIPA (3.3 or higher), including knowledge of ASL gloss.
• Current state of Arizona “Hearing Impaired” certification and/or Council on Education of the Deaf certification.
• Familiarity with Arizona Department of Education requirements for “Hearing Impaired” teacher certification and the Deaf/Hard of Hearing endorsement.
• Valid
  Driver’s License and/or the ability to arrange transportation upon the
  first day of employment
  and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

• Experience with grant coordination.
• Experience in early intervention or early childhood Deaf Education and/or with Deaf Multilingual Learners.
• Experience with online learning platforms and remote supervision using online tools, such as GoReact.
• Experience supporting teacher self-reflection practices (e.g., using the Quality of the Learning Environment-Deaf/Hard of Hearing Rating Scale).
• Experience administering and interpreting formal and informal assessments with DHH PK-12 grade students.
• Experience working with individuals with various educational, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds, including Deaf Culture.
• Expertise in course and curriculum development.
• Experience with supervising program students in general education settings and schools for the deaf.
