Your Opportunity:Reporting to the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, this position provides legal advice to the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials & Research Centre (NACTRC), with a focus on industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trial, sub-site, and data transfer agreements. NACTRC is a collaboration between the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services. Under this arrangement, we serve sponsors and investigators, increase studies, streamline processes, and provide education, all with a view to supporting clinical research.Description:Prepare, review, and negotiate industry-sponsored or investigator-initiated clinical trial agreements and research collaboration agreements. Deliver effective legal services for complex matters with little to no supervision. Communicate legal advice in a succinct and coherent manner to clients. Make practical recommendations respecting allocation of risk in contracts. Inform senior management of significant issues with wide ranging or very serious impact. Participate in the coordination and/or administration of standardized work processes, protocols, policies and procedures related to NACTRC. Work closely with NACTRC, AHS, and University of Alberta colleagues to provide strategic advice in accordance with the guiding principles and vision of NACTRC. Foster positive and productive working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:Qualified to practice law in Alberta and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. At least five years’ legal practice (excluding articling year) with a commercial focus. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Strong negotiation and legal drafting skills. Motivated to learn, independent, self-starter. Proficient at prioritizing and dealing with multiple assignments, all under significant time and other pressures. Proven ability to work with senior management. Ability to balance business considerations against legal risks to formulate creative legal solutions that advance client needs. Strong commitment to adapting and operating within a team environment and the ability to work well independently and with others to achieve common goals. Superior organizational and influential skills, client-focused orientation, and commitment to providing quality services.
Additional Required Qualifications:Due to the professional nature of this position, actual hours worked may exceed those expected in a regular work week.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience in a life sciences or academic setting working with industry sponsors, government agencies, and large healthcare companies. Knowledge of laws, regulations and industry standards governing clinical trials. Knowledge of AHS and University of Alberta policies, procedures and standards/guidelines.
