Legal Counsel – Litigation & Information Management

Job Summary:

Xpo’s litigation team handles a broad litigation portfolio touching on consumer protection, employment, IP, privacy, securities, franchise law, marketing, personal injury, insurance coverage and general contract law. We’re seeking an exceptional, business-oriented junior attorney to work closely with the SVP of litigation and information management on an array of complex U.S. corporate disputes. This role will also administer internal processes including around document retention, litigation holds and information management. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on litigation experience, particularly in complex commercial disputes and risk mitigation.

Responsibilities:

• Manage a docket of a diverse range of corporate litigation matters across the country, in a multitude of practice areas and at various procedural stages (from pre-litigation threats and small claims to class certification, trials / arbitrations, and appeals).
• Take a hands-on approach to all facets of litigation, including fact investigations, revising legal briefs, responding to discovery requests, preparing witnesses for testimony and negotiating settlements and drafting / revising settlement agreements.
• Craft succinct, practical legal advice to achieve ambitious business goals, including counseling the business on best practices and communications with franchisees.
• Manage information and document retention policies and practices to comply with all applicable laws and evolving best practices.
• Manage service of process intake and issue litigation holds where appropriate.
• Assist with quarterly litigation reporting.
• Effectively communicates and manages business client expectations while adequately planning and organizing resources to keep pace with business demand and deadlines.
• Maintains deep understanding of business objectives, adequately sports important legal issues, clearly communicates risks and considerations for business input, and takes a commercial approach to risk mitigation.
• Inspires confidence in business clients by consistently providing well-reasoned legal advice and practical solutions to complex issues.
• Exhibits a strong work ethic and takes ownership of complex projects with minimal supervision while demonstrating sound judgment and superior decision-making, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills; meets prescribed deadlines.

Pay Range: $100,000 – $160,000

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor Degree.
• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience and legal expertise in assigned practice area.
• Member of at least one U.S. state bar with ability to qualify for California in-house registration.
• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
• Ability to demonstrate and adhere to highest standards of ethics and integrity.
• Substantive experience, knowledge and understanding of legal strategies and principles related to litigation; ability to analyze and apply legal principles and precedents to legal issues; ability to perform legal research, evaluate alternatives and make sound recommendations.
• Excellent research and writing skills; ability to prepare clear, concise and complete legal documents, reports, correspondence and other communications materials on complex legal issues; ability to communicate effectively in English, in both written and oral forms; ability to make effective public presentations
• Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, and work with discretion.
• Ability to deal effectively with all business contacts, including government agencies, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, internal clients, and external business partners.
• Sound judgment and superior decision-making, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills; ability to meet prescribed deadlines.
• Basic proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Outlook.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
