<div class="isg-job-description“>What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a motivated Maintenance Engineer to support continuous operations and enable world-class manufacturing of Tesla’s cutting-edge battery packs. The Battery Pack provides energy storage for every Tesla vehicle. This is an exciting opportunity to support world-class automated equipment for Tesla’s Cybercab battery packs. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem in world-changing products.

The sustaining Maintenance Engineer’s primary responsibility is to optimize Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) through continuous improvement to PLC/HMI logic, Robotics, Mechanical/Electrical subsystems and conveyance systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Support day-to-day production uptime by leading troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions on mechanical systems, rotating equipment, linear motion components, and automated machinery
  • Identify chronic failure modes and drive redesigns of weak mechanical components-including brackets, guards, shafts, bushings, end-effectors, and structural weldments-to improve durability and reduce MTTR/MTBF losses
  • Create mechanical models, drawings, and redesign proposals using SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD tools; partner with fabrication shops to prototype and validate improvement hardware
  • Perform fit-for-purpose evaluations of bearings, couplings, linear rails, gearboxes, motors, and fasteners to select optimal replacements or upgrade paths
  • Own spare-part cost-reduction initiatives by consolidating components, eliminating unnecessary variants, identifying cross-compatible parts, and validating lower-cost suppliers without compromising safety or performance
  • Build, refine, and standardize preventive maintenance tasks using a failure-mode-based approach and incorporate design improvements into long-term PM strategies
  • Analyze downtime, maintenance, and sensor data (via CMMS/Flux or equivalent) to generate reliability insights, track corrective actions, and prioritize improvements
  • Develop technical documentation-work instructions, redesign packages, lifecycle analyses, bill of materials, and equipment modification requests-to support technicians and cross-functional engineering teams
  • Participate in commissioning, debug, and ramp of new equipment, ensuring designs meet safety, maintainability, and long-term reliability requirements

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering; or equivalent practical experience in machine design, industrial maintenance, or automated equipment
  • Hands-on understanding of mechanical design fundamentals: tolerance stacks, failure modes, lubrication, fatigue, and load-bearing components
  • Ability to read and create engineering drawings, GD&T, and mechanical schematics
  • Exposure to reliability engineering concepts (MTBF/MTTR, RPN, root cause analysis, PM optimization)
  • Experience with CAD tools and interest in rapid prototyping of mechanical solutions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a bias toward practical, shop-floor implementable solutions
  • Excellent communication and documentation discipline
  • Comfort working directly with technicians, vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams in fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environments
