Student Unions & Activities (SUA) includes three facilities: Coffman Memorial Union on the East Bank Campus, the West Bank Skyway, and the St. Paul Student Center. This position is responsible for maintenance, repairs, and inspections of the building systems and components. The position also performs miscellaneous maintenance and operations duties to include parts orders and inventory, maintaining upkeep of the Coffman Memorial Union fountain, assembling and repairing modular office furniture, small project work, acting as lead worker to student Facility Support Worker, and other duties. This position reports to the SUA Facilities Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
Repairs, Systems and Equipment (75%)

• Perform repairs and maintenance on ventilation systems, heating systems, pneumatic controls, plumbing fixtures, door hardware.
• Manage and troubleshoot computerized building systems and programs.
• Uses software programs to evaluate need for repairs (hardware or software)
• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment to include changing filters, lubricating motors, change oil, calibrate thermostats and clean coils.
• Replaces and adjusts belts and replaces filtering materials in all SUA buildings.
• Maintain, repair, and replace components of air handling units (AHUs) within SUA facilities.
• Inspects and lubricates fans, motors, bearings and other equipment.
• Repair, adjust and replaces parts on custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, snow blower, and maintains inventory parts for repairs.
• Assemble and repair modular office furniture such as panels, work surfaces, shelves, work lights, tack boards, chairs. Mount pictures, bulletin boards, pencil sharpeners.
• Responsible for the upkeep of the Coffman Memorial Union Fountain, including water flow, basin repairs, and winterization.
• Tests, cleans, lubricates, monitors and inspects fire pumps and associated equipment.

Maintenance Organization and Delivery (25%)

• Initiate routine work order for FM personnel to perform repair on equipment and facilities. Use knowledge of facility and equipment, and interpretation of blueprints to assist trades personnel performing repairs.
• Order replacement parts and maintain part inventory to include electrical, door hardware, filters, fasteners, lubricants, v-belts, pneumatic controls, adhesives, lamps.
• Identifies and initiates energy saving updates to lighting mechanisms in facilities, including LED lighting and motion detectors.
• Determines major supply or equipment needs and manages overall upkeep and replenishment, including ordering through the University and outside vendors.
• Act as lead worker for student Facility Support Worker – may plan or schedule work, make assignments, train and instruct, review performance or otherwise direct employees.

Required

• Must be able to follow detailed written work orders, oral instructions, plans and drawings.
• Must submit timely written and/or oral status reports of daily tasks and ongoing projects. Technical education/training in mechanical maintenance and/or applicable work experience to total three years. Education/training can account for no more than two of the three years. Positions may require specific licenses and/or certificates (i.e. boilers license, welding certificate, etc.) as well as specialized experience that relates to specific facilities. Positions may require the ability to walk or stand for majority of day; bend, climb, reach, kneel; carry, lift, push and pull 50 lbs. or more.
• Experience providing excellent and courteous service to a variety of customers.

About the Department:
Student Unions & Activities (SUA) is a department within the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs at the University of Minnesota. SUA provides a variety of programs and services to the University community that enhance the social, educational, and cultural environment of the University of Minnesota. This includes retail services, facility rental, space for individual and group activities, entertainment and educational programs, oversight of student activities, and involvement with diverse student groups.
SUA operates three facilities: Coffman Memorial Union on the East Bank campus, the St. Paul Student Center, and retail services on the West Bank campus. The department has an annual budget of $16.8 million. SUA is funded by student fees and revenue generated by the department.
The department has a total of 65 fulltime staff, representing all employee groups except faculty, and 250 student employees. SUA provides opportunities for students to enrich and complement their academic experience by integrating student learning outcomes with student employment.
The Student Activities area advises a campus-wide program board, registers and advises student groups, acts as a liaison to student cultural groups, and provides leadership programs.

Pay Range: $32.65 – $36.41 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
