This job manages and coordinates the daily operations of the health information management (HIM) departments to ensure consistent productivity and efficient operation. Plans and organizes all operational functions including staffing and staff development, purchasing, budgeting, regulatory compliance and customer service management. Works closely with the management teams of various departments on committees and projects.

Education

Required – Associates degree in healthcare or business administration or related field.

Additional degrees, business training experience and/or certifications may be combined to meet minimum qualifications.

Work Experience

Required – 7 years related health care experience in a health care setting including two years of supervisory or management experience.

Certifications

Preferred – Graduate of an accredited Health Information Management program with credentials of Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with physicians, administration, nurses and support staff and present information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to manage within a budget and understand financial statements to analyze trends and make recommendations.
  • Excellent judgment, decision-making, and delegating skills and ability to work independently, set priorities and maintain complete confidentiality.
  • Excellent leadership, self-direction, decision making, time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in multiple software systems which support human resources management, budget and daily operations.
  • Ability to travel throughout and between facilities and work a flexible work schedule, including working more than 8 hours a day.

Job Duties

  • Manages daily operations to ensure quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Oversees and evaluates training and development of employees and follows up with training and updates, as needed.
  • Acts as resource for foundation-wide information distribution and feedback regarding health information management.
  • Manages departmental inventory and purchasing in accordance with standards and authority guidelines.
  • Assists leadership with department business and operational planning.
  • Provides HIM expertise and support to existing and new clinical department systems to ensure documentation requirements and compliance guidelines are met.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue and as part of their employment, incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid.

The incumbent has no occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
