The MRI Technologist is responsible for providing high-quality Magnetic Resonance Imaging services with minimal supervision. The MRI Technologist serves as a positive role model while working in collaboration with all levels of departmental personnel, ensuring and providing a safe working environment and adhering to all patient safety protocols and practices.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Supervisor, MRI and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
-Must be able to effectively interact appropriately to an individual’s intellectual level and physical ability including infants, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
-Operate MR imaging and ancillary equipment to obtain high quality exams in a safe and efficient manner.
-Review medical record for patient history and pertinent clinical information. Share appropriate or unusual information with radiologists.
-Explain the exam to the patient prior to MRI procedures. Conduct MRI safety screening. Request the removal of metal objects and have patient change into non-metallic clothing.
-Request the removal of metal objects which are hazardous to the patient and equipment when magnet is activated.
-Position the patient on MRI table, select the appropriate coil, and follow prescribed protocols for imaging. Review imaging preferences with Radiologist when clinical information requires a deviation from standard protocol.
-Input required information into MR unit and ensure demographic and clinical information is accurate. provide the squeeze ball (call alarm) to the patient and instruct them on its use. Communicate with patient throughout the procedure using the intercom.
-Observe patient throughout procedure for patient safety and signs of discomfort. Provide coaching to patient throughout the exam.
-Maintain professional technologist/patient relationship and work practices.
-Electronically transmit required images to the vendor-neutral archive and other network destinations. Ensure integrity of patient demographics of the transmitted electronic images and/or electronic file jacket and perform quality assurance or other corrective actions if necessary.
-Act as safety agent for MRI department. Adhere to policies and procedures for patients, non-MR personnel and visitors entering the progressively restricted MRI safety zones (zones II through IV). Perform MRI safety screening for patients, non-MR personnel and visitors entering beyond zone II.
-Perform independent quality control procedures at the designated intervals on imaging and ancillary equipment to ensure compliance to Federal/State and Joint Commission standards of care.
-Perform preceptor responsibilities for new hires and when needed, educate medical staff and students on MRI department technical procedures and operations.
-Collaborate, communicate, and problem solve with other modalities of the Medical Imaging department, and establish ongoing lines of communication with other CDHC departments.
-Organize daily work schedule and respond to emergencies as necessary.
-Demonstrate competence in the use of the Radiology Information System (RIS) and other computer systems interfaced with the RIS.
-Perform on-call duties and/or work variable shifts as assigned to meet the needs of the department.
-Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
-Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations, or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.
-Meet annual competency and retraining requirements, including IV insertion and contrast administration.
-Attend meetings as required.

Experience
MR experience and/or training required 1-2 years preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
– Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of general anatomy, physiology and medical terminology required, as well as a high level of knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy required.
– Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication and organizational skills required.
– Demonstrated ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations required.
– Ability to obtain post-primary certification from the ARRT in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or be exam-eligible within 18 months.
