About the Opportunity

Northeastern University is a national leader in cooperative education in which students alternate between academic study and work experiences. The College of Engineering has a robust co-op program for graduate engineering students and its rapid expansion now requires more support to continue developing and growing the program. This is a full time, non-tenure track faculty position, primarily working with students in the College of Engineering’s Multidisciplinary Graduate Engineering (MGEN) Unit on the Boston campus.

Specific responsibilities include:

Employer Relations/Job Development

The Cooperative Education Coordinator is expected to:

• develop partnerships with employers by working with executive, supervisory, and human resources contacts
• develop new and maintain ongoing co-op positions, and make appropriate referrals for students to apply to these positions
• maintain a current understanding of the industry/field, employers, and positions.

Activities to support this endeavor include: site visits to new and existing employers, follow up communications, and continued efforts to develop new and enhance current relationships with employers. 

Preparation of Students

• The Cooperative Education Coordinator will prepare students for the co-op search and work experience, both by teaching co-op related courses each semester and through individual advising meetings. Preparation includes teaching tools appropriate for co-op search (interviewing skills, resume writing, LinkedIn, professional behavior, and job search tools) as well as career foundations topics (such as ethics, mindset, mindfulness, motivation, and diversity).
• The coordinator will be the primary point of contact for a large group of students in preparing for co-op and while on co-op.
• The Coordinator will collaborate with college faculty, administration, and other co-op coordinators both within the unit and across the university to help students integrate their co-op and academic education and share knowledge of the industry with academic faculty to integrate work-based learning with curriculum-based learning.

Service

• The coordinator will also perform co-op, MGEN, college, and university service as agreed upon by the Coordinator and Director of the MGEN Co-op Unit of the College of Engineering.
• Further, he/she/they will be encouraged to engage in service opportunities outside the University to enhance the reputation of the co-op program and the University.

Qualifications

• A master’s degree in higher education administration, engineering, business administration, or a related field is required by the appointment start date.
• A minimum of five years of professional work experience is required.
• Substantial use of technology tools is required and excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
• Experience working with a diverse staff/student populations, international students, and a demonstrated commitment to achieving and maintaining diversity in the workplace is required.
• Experience working with engineers in a Human Resources setting or in the career development, recruiting or counseling of engineering students is a plus.
