Paralegal – Information Rights

Job Introduction

We are recruiting for a paralegal in our Information Rights Team. Working with other members of the team, the main focus of the role will be the processing of subject access requests (SAR’s) in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act. In addition the role may involve further data protection and privacy law (including data subject rights and data security); public and administrative law and statutory interpretation; freedom of information issues. This is a fixed-term contract role to the end of March 2025, based in London. The team currently work in the office two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) but you will be required to be flexible to change in order to reflect work demands.

The BBC Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice to the BBC and for developing and implementing the BBC’s legal strategy. The BBC Legal Division is led by the BBC’s General Counsel and provides legal assistance and advice across the BBC. It is made up of the following departments: General Counsel’s Office, Litigation and Information Rights, Intellectual Property , Employment , Programme Legal Advice, Commercial, Design and Engineering and Competition and Regulatory Law.

The work can be challenging and fast-paced at times, but we are open to agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible working policies.

Main Responsibilities

As a paralegal in the team, you will work alongside the team of Advisors reporting to the Senior Head of Compliance in the Information Rights Team to undertake the processing of subject access requests. You will conduct initial relevant information searches using technology solutions where appropriate, and apply appropriate legal redactions to search results, with particular focus on consideration of third party personal data and relevancy to the specific request. You may also work collaboratively with colleagues dealing with large volume SAR’s, as well as the Data Protection Officer, and with the Information Security unit.

Are you the right candidate?

You will have a first degree in law (or postgraduate diploma in law) or be a qualified Chartered Legal Executive. You will possess a good understanding of the English legal system and knowledge of public/ administrative law and the principles of judicial review. You will be able to conduct legal and general research thoroughly, quickly and accurately, and to communicate clearly the results, orally and in writing, to legal and non-legal audiences.

You will have an understanding of the issues affecting the BBC and the media industry. Experience of the Data Protection Act and more specifically the handling of subject access requests and knowledge of reporting and managing personal data breaches and compliance with other data subject rights will be an advantage.

Location: London based role. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working

Salary: £28,000 – £33,000pa plus London Weighting (£5,319pa), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
