Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Spring 2025, January -May 2025, on campus; day and time TBD. Undergraduate courses (100-500 level) are -taught 2x per week for 80 minutes.

Job Description 

We are seeking adjuncts/part-time instructors who can provide instruction and expertise in one or more of the following areas for our undergraduate students at the iSchool: Database management, graphic design for the web, human centered design, information reporting and presentation, information visualization. Please see specific classes below and their class description and note in your cover letter which class you are interested in teaching. Those from marginalized groups, women, and veterans are encouraged to apply.

  • IST 305 Globalization: Collaboration, Culture, Systems, and Data

o The course is designed to help students better navigate the global enterprise and understand the IT infrastructure, data and cultural issues associated with this form of technology, organizing, and work. The course revolves around four main themes (1) global culture, (2) global collaboration, (3), global systems and (4) global data. The course draws on the disciplines of organization science, information systems, business management, and data science. It offers analytical skills and practical tools that enable students to analyze the social and technical challenges and possibilities that enterprises face operating in a global world

  • IST 341 Human Centered Design

o This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of human-computer interaction (HCI), more often referred to as “User Experience” in industry and professional contexts. Students will try out a variety of research and design techniques through a team-based human-centered design project. The larger goal of the course is to help students understand how, when, and why HCI/UX expertise can contribute to technology design and development. This is a project-based course, grounded in the belief that students learn best by doing.

  • IST 344: Information Presentation and Reporting

o This course covers communication, presentation, and professionalism. Students learn to effectively communicate, present with enthusiasm, and impress colleagues and teammates. Course topics include: (1) Professionalism. (2) Professional communications including LinkedIn, interviews, and emails. (3) Professional presentations including pitches, slide decks, and boardroom and ballroom presentations. (4) Presenting data including charts, diagrams, and infographics. (5) An introduction to data analytics.

  • IST 359 Introduction to Database Management Systems

o This course examines data structures, file organizations, concepts and principles of database management systems (DBMS); as well as data analysis, database design, data modeling, and database implementation. More specifically, IST 359 introduces and focuses on the relational data model; entity-relationship modeling; the Structured Query Language (SQL); data normalization; and database design. Using Microsoft’s SQL server DBMS as an implementation vehicle, this course provides hands-on experience in database design and implementation through assignments, lab exercises and class exercises.

  • IST 414 Data Driven Inquiry

o This course introduces students to a variety of approaches to answer questions in different contexts (e.g., business, society, friendships, politics). Students will learn how to ask good questions and answer those questions ethically using a variety of data-driven approaches, including quantitative, qualitative, and computational. By the end of this course, the student will be able to: Describe the criteria that determine the quality of research questions; Synthesize findings from published, peer-reviewed research that inform a question; Generate researchable questions for various types of situations; Critique various methods of obtaining data, describing pros and cons of each method; Identify appropriate data collection/analysis methods for a given research question, also using guidance from published, peer-reviewed research; Engage in ethical analysis of the process of conducting research and the effects of the research on individuals, organizations, and society; Recognize strengths and limitations in a given research data set and/or analytic results; Analyze data emerging from a research design using basic qualitative and quantitative.

  • IST 421 Information Visualization

o A broad introduction to data visualization through various programming and illustration tools, data cleaning techniques, design concepts and ethics. Students will develop a portfolio of resources, demonstrations, recipes, and examples of various data visualization techniques to explore and communicate findings.

  • IST 523 Graphic Design for the Web

o Students learn basic and advanced website design principles utilizing Adobe Photoshop and Flash, with emphasis on typography, color theory and layout. Understand and practice Flash ActionScript basics to create animation and dynamic web applications

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Science, Project Management, or related field.
  • Those with an unrelated degree but with relevant experience or background in the field will be considered.
  • Applicants should also have knowledge and 3 years or more of real- world work experience with any of the topics described above.

Job Specific Qualifications 

Responsibilities 

Successful candidates will be prepared to serve as instructor and mentor and be willing to work with the Professor of Record, Program Director, and other instructors teaching this class. Our courses have a developed syllabus, exercises, and texts, however, we seek individuals who can bring their own experiences to the course.

  • Collaborate with professor of record and/or program director, who is responsible for creating the course syllabus and course content, as well as providing an overview of their overall vision for the course.
  • Attend onboarding and training with the iSchool’s Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL)
  • Maintain office hours and open communication with students.
  • Maintain the course in the Blackboard Learning Management system
  • Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner; provide feedback when appropriate.
  • Prepare for weekly in-person sessions with students
  • Prepare to offer the class in the Spring 2025 semester on campus
