Physician Nutrition Specialist

For 3 months with a possibility of extension

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

Under the supervision of the Nutrition Coordinator and in close collaboration with the Nutrition Program Manager, the Physician Nutrition Specialist will provide technical oversight to the design, development and implementation of the organization’s case management and capacity building of health workers in Gaza selected hospitals providing inpatients management.

(S)he will be expected to support health administration hospitals on updating SOPs, if necessary, managing everyday cases as part of on job training, advise on treatments, and support on stabilization and recovery of patients, including children’s and pregnant women.

(S)he will also design and implement capacity-building programs for health workers on the aspects of case management inside Gaza Strip and deliver training in line with global best practices and standards.

(S)he will collaborate closely with the MHPSS team to develop a multisectoral approach in services provision. As well as with the outreach teams providing support once discharged.

(S)he will, upon request, represent Action Against Hunger to donors, authorities and in Clusters, and relevant Working Groups.

Objective1: Technical Oversight and Support:

  • Provide technical guidance to design, develop, and implement case management and capacity-building programs for health workers in Gaza’s selected hospitals.
  • Support health administration in updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as needed.
  • Manage everyday malnutrition cases as part of on-the-job training, advising on treatments and supporting the stabilization and recovery of patients, including children and pregnant women.
  • Conduct regular assessments of malnutrition cases and provide detailed reports on patient progress.
  • Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track the effectiveness of case management practices.
  • Ensure adherence to international standards and protocols in malnutrition treatment and management.

Objective 2: Design and Implement Capacity Building Programs:

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive capacity-building programs for health workers on case management of malnutrition, ensuring alignment with global best practices and standards.
  • Conduct training sessions and workshops to enhance the skills and knowledge of hospital staff.
  • Create training materials and resources tailored to the specific needs of health workers in Gaza.
  • Evaluate the impact of training programs through pre- and post-training assessments.
  • Collaborate with the MHPSS team to integrate a multisectoral approach in service provision.
  • Facilitate peer-to-peer learning opportunities and knowledge-sharing sessions among health workers.

Objective 3: Enhance Case Management Practices:

  • Provide on-the-job training to hospital staff, guiding them through real-life cases and offering immediate feedback.

  • Advise on treatment plans and support the stabilization and recovery process for malnutrition patients.

  • Develop case studies and best practice guidelines based on successful case management experiences.

  • Facilitate regular review meetings with hospital staff to discuss case management challenges and solutions.

  • Work closely with outreach teams to ensure continuous support for patient’s post-discharge.

  • Implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance case management practices.

    Objective 4:Training and Support for Doctors and Health Workers:

  • Conduct specialized training sessions for doctors and health workers on advanced case management techniques.

  • Provide mentorship and support to doctors and health workers, helping them to develop and refine their skills in managing malnutrition cases.

  • Organize peer-to-peer learning opportunities and knowledge-sharing sessions to foster a collaborative learning environment.

  • Assist in the development of individualized professional development plans for health workers to ensure continuous improvement.

  • Support the integration of new treatment protocols and guidelines into daily practice.

  • Develop and maintain a resource library of up-to-date research and best practices in malnutrition management.

Objective 5: Representation and Advocacy:

  • If required, Represent Action Against Hunger in meetings with donors, authorities, and relevant clusters and working groups.
  • Advocate for sound technical solutions to overcome malnutrition challenges based on evidence.
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, authorities, and UN agencies, to support H&N programming.
  • If required, Prepare and deliver presentations on the organization work and impact in Gaza to various stakeholders.
  • If required, contribute to the development of advocacy materials and campaigns to raise awareness about malnutrition issues.
  • If required, participate in national and international forums to share insights and learnings from the field.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree in Medicine.
  • Master’s degree in nutrition, or related topic.
  • Extensive experience in managing malnutrition cases at secondary level.
  • Proven experience in teaching and capacity building.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience in case management (at least 3 years).
  • Good experience at capacity building of health workers.
  • At least 2 years of clinical supervision of teams, whose size, composition and seniority may vary.
  • Previous related experience in case management.
  • At least 3 years of experience in humanitarian settings.
  • Previous experience or solid knowledge of Gaza context is desirable.
  • Ability to adapt to challenging settings.
  • Knowledge of other key AAH sectors (WASH, FSL) will be appreciated.
  • Fluency in English both written and verbal. Arabic (preferable but not required).
  • Windows, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook).
  • Based in Gaza (100%) – could have up to 10% remote to prepare & close the mission.
  • Valuable prior experience in issues related to the promotion of gender equality or personal commitment to gender equality.

A compensation package consisting of:

  • Salary: Competitive Salary
  • Benefits package * estimated at 15,000 euros / year paid directly by the organization that includes:
  • Insurance for the expatriate (health, life, repatriation, travel etc.).
  • Travel allowance for breaks: up to 365 EUR.
  • Per Diem of 215 euros for each break.
  • Annual leave return ticket.
  • Accommodation in guest house or payment of an allowance covering partially an individual rent.
  • Return ticket to the mission.
  • Child allowance per child (under 18 years old): from 100€ to 225€ monthly (according to standard list of Action Against Hunger-Spain)
