The position is a joint appointment between The University of British Columbia (UBC) Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences and the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD: research location). The candidate will lead a clinical research project to test a novel approach to the hemodynamic management of newly injured patients with SCI. In addition, there is an opportunity to be involved in leading other clinical cardiovascular research projects in individuals living with chronic SCI.The position is located in Vancouver, Canada, at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, where the candidate will join the labs of Drs. Christopher West and Brian Kwon. Dr. Christopher West leads a translational program of research focused on the cardiovascular and autonomic consequences of SCI. Dr. Brian Kwon is a surgeon-scientist with diverse research interests that span acute hemodynamic management, biomarkers for injury severity, and large animal modelling. Both the West and Kwon labs offer a highly-collaborative training environment for emerging scholars in the field of SCI.Key responsibilitiesLead a cross-over hemodynamic monitoring study in acutely injured individuals with SCILead a longitudinal pilot randomized clinical trial to test a novel approach to the hemodynamic management of newly injured individuals with SCICollaborate and integrate with the clinical care team at Vancouver General HospitalLead the development and application for clinical research ethicsConduct detailed cardiovascular and autonomic screening tests in individuals with SCIWrite manuscripts and present findings at international conferencesQualificationsThe successful candidate should have a PhD in cardiovascular physiology and/or spinal cord injury biology. They should have strong hands-on skills in performing, analyzing and interpreting common cardiovascular assessment techniques, such as ultrasound. The candidate will have a proven track record in working in a clinical setting and ideally would have prior experience in working with individuals with SCI. In addition, the candidate should be able to work well within a larger team-based environment and have outstanding written and oral communication skills.Pay will be commensurate with the level of experience and subject to UBC regulations for stipends for postdoctoral fellows. The expected salary for this position is $70,000 CAD per annum.
