The successful applicant will be located at the BC Centre for Disease Control, working within the Community Antimicrobial Stewardship team within the Public Health Response service line, whose mission is to improve health‐care related outcomes through the application of the best in research, education and practice enhancement strategies.The Fellow will work under the supervision of Dr. David Patrick, a Professor in the School of Population and Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine at the UBC, and for the purposes of the national project, receive guidance from Dr Kevin Schwartz, Infectious Disease physician and Assistant Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto (U of T) and Public Health Ontario. Their program of research focuses on the use of antibiotics at the population level as well as appropriateness of use. Within both UBC and U of T, there are a host of other post-doctoral fellows, PhD and undergraduate students whom the fellow can interact with on a daily basis. The successful candidate will also help to mentor and supervise graduate students who are working on this (or related) project(s).The successful candidate will be involved in an exciting Canada wide project in designing and evaluating prescribing feedback instruments for primary care providers across the country with a view to reducing unnecessary use of antibiotics in the community nationwide.This full-time position is available for a one year period, starting as soon as possible, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance and funding availability (e.g., external postdoctoral funding through sources such as and MSFHR to support year 2). The yearly salary ranges between $70,000-76,000, dependent on qualifications and experience, with extended health benefits, office space, use of appropriate computational services, and full access to university libraries.Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.Duties and responsibilities:The primary activities of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow include:
- Assisting with design, implementation and evaluation of audit and feedback messaging for primary care physicians and/or other prescribers
- Writing detailed analysis plans, preparing data for analysis and managing data files and metadata
- Linking administrative data in a secure environment
- Performing analysis using suitable statistical methods and data visualization
- Performing meta-analysis across similar Canadian studies
- Coordinating with the national CANBuild-AMR effort including meta-analysis of similar Canadian studies
- Clearly communicate results verbally and in writing
- Writing papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Writing grants toward additional funding for the effort
Errors made could influence the ability of the research team to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research project, and therefore impact the credibility of the Investigators. Poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of the Investigators, the School, and the University and could lead to incorrect or inappropriate policy recommendations being made.This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.Supervision Received:The incumbent will have an advisory team consisting of Dr. Patrick (BCCDC and SPPH), Dr. Hannah Lishman (Senior Scientist at BCCDC), Dr. Fawziah Lalji (Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC), Dr. Colin Dormuth (UBC Therapeutics Initiative) and Dr. Kevin Schwartz. Day to day supervision will come from Dr. Patrick and Dr. Lishman.Supervision Given:Will be expected to help with supervision of any students attached to the effort or the broader Community Antimicrobial Stewardship team.Qualifications:
- The candidate must have completed a PhD or PhD-equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. epidemiology and/or biostatistics, public health, occupational health, pharmaco-epidemiology).
- Training in the following areas: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Control of Infectious Disease
- Experience with using a variety of statistical software (e.g., SAS, STATA, R) and in advanced multivariable modelling techniques.
- Experience with large linked data sets is very valuable. Experience with randomized-controlled trials and similar designs is an asset.
- Knowledge and experience with respect to antibiotic and antibiotic-resistance is an asset. Knowledge and experience with implementation science is an asset.
- A high level of proficiency in statistical analyses with large administrative health datasets is essential
- Strong general research and interpersonal skills.
- Strong competencies in MS Office software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated abilities as a team player
- Ability to independently organize workload, set goals and work effectively towards deadlines
