Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Description:Course number and title: PPG2000H-S Politics and Policy ProcessCourse description: This core course, taught by Prof. Phil Triadafilopoulos, in the MPP program aims to help students understand the connection between politics and public policy by making sense of the political environment in which policy decisions are made, and the political forces at work throughout the policy process.
The course proceeds in two parts. First, students explore foundational theories of policy making that seek to capture the role of organized interests, the importance of political institutions, and the influence of ideas and ideology. Part two builds on this theoretical foundation by focusing on each specific “stage” of the policy process, investigating how policy issues emerge, agendas are set, programs designed and implemented, and outcomes evaluated. Particular attention is paid to how well theories of human motivation and rational decision making apply to real-world experiences in public policy.Estimated course enrolment: 95 studentsHours of Work: 90 hoursClass schedule: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10am-1pm*The delivery method for this course is expected to be in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.Sessional dates of SIA appointment: March 10, 2025 – May 7, 2025Salary: Sessional Instructor Assistant (SIA) $52.26/hour, plus vacation pay
*Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.Qualifications: A graduate student with a background in Canadian politics.Description of duties: The PPG200H SIA will work closely with the instructor and the class to achieve the following, in-person duties:
i) the development of critical, timely and relevant background materials and case studies to support in-class exercises and students’ individual and group graded assignments on applied policy development and implementation
ii) critical and timely feedback to the lectures based on own MPP1 or other academic experience and class, on the course syllabus, readings, examples and exercises
iii) development, co-ordination and delivery of course related workshops
iv) preliminary marking of some assignments
v) clear communications across the sections regarding instructor expectations and assignments
vi) effective liaison with guest speakers around their topics, dates, logistics
vii) complete all grading for all student work that is completed during the term of the appointment, up to and including final exams
