Description

We are seeking a self-motivated, collaborative professional with prior environmental health and safety experience to join our Private Sector Health and Safety (H&S) team. The ideal candidate is a proactive team player who thrives in dynamic, fast-paced project environments and is ready to support a diverse portfolio of work spanning active mining operations, treatment plant construction, and environmental remediation. This role is well suited for someone who brings sound technical judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to helping projects succeed safely and efficiently.

The Health & Safety Partner role performs multifaceted occupational health and workplace safety tasks and provides technical, and systems support to functional areas and for successful project delivery related to identifying, evaluating, eliminating and mitigating workplace hazards to prevent incidents. This includes support in the development and implementation of safety plans, policies, procedures and other guidance related to ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, client requirements, and industry standards. Work is performed independently under limited supervision with occasional guidance on complex or strategic issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching and support to functional areas, project teams, and/or employees on health and safety policies, procedures, and other guidance. This includes monitoring compliance, performance indicator tracking and/or reporting within the area of support.
  • Conduct routine inspections, audits, and/or work observations to assist in identifying potential hazards in the workplace environment. This includes reviewing and engaging, when applicable, for submitted inspections, audits or work observations within functional area as applicable to the situation.
  • Support the development of and/or administrative review of project-specific Health and Safety Plans, including conducting technical reviews for low to medium risk projects.
  • Maintain, monitor, and support aspects of local office health and safety, including related policies and procedures.
  • Support, as applicable to operational area and/or project, with incorporating and complying with BC procedures and policies, client requirements, and local, state, and federal regulatory health and safety standards identifying areas for improvement and implementing appropriate solutions with involved parties. This includes interpretation and compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements as applicable to the regulatory status of the operations and scope of work. ,
  • Participate in the facilitation of company’s H&S Training program including leading development and implementation of employee training in partnership with the H&S team, the Business Units and Legal.
  • Respond to incidents promptly, coordinating the necessary response using available resources including appropriate escalation of the event, leading at least initial investigation data collection, and partnering with respective involved parties in facilitating the development and implementation of associated actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Provide guidance on health and safety management practices during field projects as guided by BC procedures and policies as well as the project’ site-specific H&S Plan.
  • Contributes to maintaining occupational health and workplace safety procedures and protocols, and stewarding digital processes and tools as assigned.
  • Support maintaining health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with governing standards and regulations for company and/or functional area.
  • Support management and facilitation of company personal protective equipment (PPE) and other similar programs.
  • Provide basic ergonomic support and guidance to affected team members when needed.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Mentorship

  • May provide mentorship, guidance, support and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow in their roles.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to complete complex assignments independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective relationship building and fostering collaboration with a variety of business partners.
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills, with demonstrated ability to provide guidance related to organizational policies, procedures, and other guidelines.
  • Solid understanding of health and safety regulations and standards that include OSHA General Industry (29 CFR 1910) and OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926) as well as at least familiarization with those established by MSHA (30 CFR 56.12001).
  • Strong understanding of common hazards and minimum controls associated with operations (e.g. investigation, remediation, O&M of treatment systems, etc.) that fall under the HAZWOPER standard (1910.120/1926.65).
  • Familiarization with the common hazards and minimum controls associated with water supply and wastewater (sanitary or process) treatment facilities (e.g., confined space entry, air monitoring, fall protection, etc.).
  • Strong ability to be able to review and interpret regulatory, client and/or company policies, procedures, and guidance for implementation, maintenance and/or development.
  • Strong knowledge in hazard assessment and control principles demonstrated experience in identifying hazards and eliminating or mitigating associated potential risks. This includes the ability to develop and appropriately review task-specific Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs).
  • Strong understanding of company incident management program with ability to effectively support incident management and investigation through close-out. Including demonstrated ability to provide guidance and recommendations for appropriate actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Strong understanding of H&S organization and functional area leading and lagging indicator tracking and reporting processes.
  • Demonstrates a strong aptitude for quickly mastering new software applications and documenting procedures, ensuring alignment with BC’s evolving programs and guidelines to maintain up-to-date and compliant operations (i.e., CoPilot, Adobe/Bluebeam/SpecLink).
  • Capable of managing and maintaining H&S systems with strong skills in adapting to new technology and adopting new systems or software.
  • Skilled in MS Office products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook; proficiency with Internet applications.

Experience

  • Typically, a minimum of 5 years of experience in a health and safety role within a similar work environment.
  • Developing and/or facilitating occupational health and workplace safety standards and protocols for active, on-site projects involving aspects of waste or wastewater treatment, environmental investigation or remedial activities, and/or during construction activities
  • Supporting incident management, investigation and corrective/preventative action development.
  • Previous use and fundamental administration of digital H&S management platforms and tools including incident management systems, learning management systems, field data collection software, and vehicle telematics.
  • Experience in H&S management system implementation and assurance.

education

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Health and Safety (Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, etc.) or in similar field (Chemistry, Engineering, Construction Management, etc.) or equivalent is required.
  • Relevant Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification or ability to obtain (e.g., OHST, CHST, ASP, GSP, or CSP) is required.
  • Additional health and safety certifications or specialized training may be required.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Health and Safety (Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, etc.) or in similar field (Chemistry, Engineering, Construction Management, etc.) or equivalent is required.

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $85,000 – $116,000
Location B: $94,000 – $128,000
Location C: $102,000 – $140,000
