Psychology Assistant Professor

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.

The Department’s primary focus is currently on increasing access to Abnormal Behavior (PSYC 340), Human sexuality (PSYC 356), Physiology and Pharmacology: Alcohol & Other drugs (PSYC 401/HSER 341), Techniques of Interviewing and Counseling (HSER 360), Group Techniques (HSER 365) courses as these are a part of the degrees in Psychology and Human Services/Chemical Dependency certificates. The demand for these courses has been consistently increasing in part due to the popularity of the Psychology degree (34.4% of all awarded AATs in the college in 2024-25) and growth of the Human Services/Chemical Dependency program (19.6%) along with increases in mental and behavioral health jobs in the Sacramento region. Of particular note, the Human Services/Chemical Dependency program is an approved and accredited program with CCAPP (California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals) in which specified courses must be offered in-person and faculty must be clinically trained and hold one of the following licenses: LCSW, MFT, LPCC, clinical psychology, or be a CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) lll or its equivalent.
The Psychology Department and its Human Services/Chemical Dependency Program maintains a focus on creating a supportive and equitable environment that serves students to achieve the following:

• A.A. degree in Psychology.
• A.A. degrees in Chemical Dependency Studies and Human Services.
• Certificates in Chemical Dependency Studies, Human Services, and Mental and Behavioral Health.
• Completion of their general education requirements.
• Successful transfer to four-year institutions and pursuing additional study in fields such as clinical psychology, counseling, research, education, and applied behavioral sciences.
• Prepare students for a variety of careers such as social services, behavioral support, paraprofessional work with chemical dependency agencies, human resources, community outreach, research assistance, nursing, teaching, and law enforcement.

Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). Minimum Qualification Requirements:

• Degree titles must match the stated qualifications exactly (word-for-word).
• If the degree title differs, or if it contains added, missing, or rearranged words, applicants must submit a completed Equivalency Determination Request Form for the application to be considered. See the Equivalency Determination Process webpage for details.
  • Example: If a master’s in Psychology is required but the transcript lists Counseling Psychology and that title is not listed in the Minimum Qualifications, an Equivalency Determination Request Form must be submitted.

Transcript Requirements:

• Transcripts must be from an accredited U.S. institutions or approved foreign evaluation agency.
• Foreign transcript evaluations must be issued by an AICE (Association of International Credential Evaluation, Inc.) or NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services) member agency. See the Foreign Transcript Evaluation webpage for details.
• Transcripts must clearly identify the degree(s) being used to meet the Minimum Qualifications.
• If more than one degree is required to meet the Minimum Qualifications (e.g., a bachelor’s and a master’s), transcripts for each degree must be included.
• Transcripts must show the degree title and indicate whether each degree is completed or in progress.
