Duties and Responsibilities

1. Background The United Nations (UN) is committed to supporting Eritrea in its development goals and promoting peace, security, and human rights. The UN Country Team in Eritrea collaborates across various agencies to tackle critical issues such as poverty reduction, health care, education, and sustainable development. Effective strategic communication is essential to share Eritrea”s challenges and successes, raising awareness of its development needs and fostering collaboration. 2. Specific Responsibilities and Tasks Under the overall guidance of the Resident Coordinator, Ms. Nahla Valji , in close consultation with the Head of RCO Mr. Pacome Kossy and the UNCT members, the Communications Consultant will have the following activities: – Enhance Visibility: Improve the visibility of UN programs through effective messaging and media engagement. – Implement Communication Strategy: Support the implementation of the UN Country Team communications strategy, with regular reviews and adjustments. – Graphic Design: Create visually compelling materials to communicate key messages about Eritrea. – Support UN Communication Group: Participate in and support the UN Communication Group (UNCG) activities. – Activity Monitoring: Update the UN Country Team on the activities of all UN Agencies in Eritrea. – Social Media Strategy: Assist in implementing a social media and communications strategy. – Data Story Development: Design visualizations and data stories to produce impact stories on sustainable development. – Additional Duties: Perform related duties as assigned by the Resident Coordinator or Head of RCO. The Communications Consultant will have the following specific responsibilities: Strategic Communications Planning • Identify key audiences and tailor communication strategies. • Support planning and conceptualizing events or advocacy activities. • Coordinate visits to Eritrea by various delegations. • Maintain and update the UN Eritrea website. • Maintain a photo database highlighting sustainable development issues. Content Development • Create high-quality content for press releases, articles, and social media. • Design visually appealing materials (e.g., infographics, brochures). Media Relations • Build relationships with local and international media outlets. • Coordinate media events and respond to inquiries. Stakeholder Engagement • Collaborate with UN agencies and partners for a unified communication approach. • Organize workshops on effective communication strategies. Monitoring and Evaluation • Monitor and evaluate communication strategies and adjust as necessary. • Prepare regular reports on communication activities.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field. Minimum of 2 years in strategic communications, preferably in the UN or international development is required. Proven experience in graphic design and social media management is required. Strong writing and editing skills are required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills is required. Knowledge of digital communication strategies is required.

Languages

Proficiency in written and spoken English is required; proficiency in other UN languages is advantageous.
