Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Resident Coordinator leads the UN Country Team in China, including all the UN entities present in China. The purpose of the Resident Coordinators System (RCS) is to bring together different UN agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level, helping the UN to be a more relevant and reliable partner for governments, notably by establishing and strengthening these partnerships for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN Resident Coordinators Office (RCO) supports the roles and functions of the UN Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team. The RCO provides inter-agency coordination support to the UN Country Team (UNCT) and its various inter-agency working mechanisms, including theme groups. Key functions of the RCO include: – Strategic analysis, planning and positioning of the Country Team – Preparation and monitoring of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) -Support to joint UN programming and operations management – Policy guidance – Joint advocacy and communications to enhance UN coherence – Improve overall programme impact of the UN System in China RCO China is looking for a motivated Economics and Development Finance intern to join the office for 6 months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. The intern will support the senior economist in conducting research and analyses that will serve as key inputs to the CCA and new UNSDCF and will also support UNCT members in their programming. Which includes: – Contribute to the UN coordination function by providing relevant support to UN coordination mechanisms and UNCT activities under the guidance of the Economist of the RCO – Conduct independent research and provide inputs to reports and analyses produced by the office – Support the finalization of the Common Country Analysis and the new UN Cooperation Framework by compiling and synthesizing inputs, identifying data sources, preparing charts, graphs, infographics and other visuals for the CCA – Support the RCO’s policy work by contributing to the compilation and preparation of briefing and presentation materials, background information and documentation – Support the development and updating of databases and other information management activities – Draft talking points and inputs of speeches for meetings, events and missions – Support team members in facilitating on-site, inter-agency and high-level meetings or events – Complete other ad hoc tasks requested by the office and/or the supervisor
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Chinese is an advantage.
