Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office (UN RCO) in Bhutan supports the coordination of UN agencies operating in the country to ensure alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national development priorities. Communication and advocacy play a vital role in amplifying the impact of the UN’s work, fostering partnerships, and engaging diverse audiences. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. An internship duration of two to six months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of six months. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned. The intern will work under the supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Officer and will be responsible for the following: 1. Content Creation and Management • Develop content for social media, websites, newsletters, and press releases. • Design graphics, videos, and other multimedia content to support campaigns. • Assist in documenting UN events and initiatives through photography, videography, and written articles (if applicable). 2. Campaign Support • Support the planning and execution of communication and advocacy campaigns, such as the Include Ability, SDG Media Compact, All-staff Townhalls, and the 16 Days of Activism. • Assist in organizing virtual events, webinars, and panel discussions on key SDG themes. • Contribute to brainstorming and implementing innovative outreach strategies targeting youth and other key audiences. 3. Research and Monitoring • Conduct research on trends and best practices in communication and advocacy. • Monitor media coverage and prepare reports on the UN’s visibility and public perception. • Analyze audience engagement on digital platforms and recommend improvements. 4. Partnership Engagement • Assist in liaising with media, influencers, and partner organizations. • Assist the development of outreach materials for stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society, and private sector partners. 5. Administrative Support • Maintain a content calendar and ensure timely posting of updates. • Assist the coordination of team meetings, minutes, and follow-ups. • Assist with other administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent Skills: • Proficiency in social media platforms and content creation tools (e.g., Canva, or equivalent). • Excellent writing and editing skills in English. • Basic knowledge of graphic design and video editing software is a plus. • Familiarity with SDGs and the UN system is an asset. Attitude: • Proactive, creative, and able to work independently. • Strong organizational and multitasking skills. • Cultural sensitivity and adaptability in a remote work environment. Stipend This is an unpaid internship. Interns will receive a certificate of completion and a reference letter upon successful completion of the program. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
