  • In July 2016 the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) launched an Ethics Review Panel (ERP). The ERP is intended to provide a mechanism for ethics approval for practice-based veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses who wish to undertake research projects outside the scope of an academic or industry context.
  • The ERP’s remit involves reviewing research projects involving cats, dogs, horses, farm animals, and other species on a case-by-case basis. The Panel will also review sociological studies involving veterinary staff.
  • We are seeking to appoint two new lay members to the Panel. This role will complement existing panel members comprising ethicists, veterinary researchers, veterinary nurses and lay members.
  • Membership of the ERP will provide an opportunity for an experienced individual to make an important contribution to research and the future of evidence-based veterinary medicine.

Time commitments

  • Initially, one half day will be required for training carried out remotely in 2024.
  • The ERP will review applications to conduct research studies from veterinary surgeons and RVNs in practice and approve, require clarification, or reject them as ethically and scientifically unsound.
  • It is expected that there will be two half-day meetings of the ERP per year, held remotely, and all routine work will be conducted remotely. It is anticipated that each application received will require 2 hours work to review. It is difficult to estimate how many applications will be received, but as a guide we are expecting around 140 applications a year, so you may receive one to two applications a month to review.
  • Appointment to the role will be for 3 years and will be renewable at the discretion of the RCVS.

Compensation

  • Post-holders can claim a loss of earnings allowance, and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Scope of the post

  • Under the lead of the Chair, members will apply their specific experience to consideration of applications for ethics approval and contribute to the assessment of applications received from veterinary surgeons and RVNs.

Specific tasks for the Panel

  • To consider applications for ethics approval and make decisions, in conjunction with other ERP members, on whether the studies proposed are scientifically sound, and that the ethical and any legal issues have been adequately addressed.
  • To attend meetings of the ERP to discuss applications and contribute to best practice going forward.

Criteria for the role

  • Experience of professional regulation and ethics, and ideally, a background in clinical veterinary practice or research.
  • Experience in reviewing applications for scientific soundness and for ethics content.
  • Enthusiasm for evidence-based veterinary medicine and the advancement of veterinary science.
  • Good written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines.
  • Experience of pet ownership
