In The Gambia, UNICEF works with the Government to deliver services for children across the country. Guided by the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF works to ensure every child survives and thrives, and is protected from violence, discrimination and all forms of harmful traditional practices.

Since 1965, we have partnered with the Government of The Gambia to strengthen national laws and policies and empower local communities to deliver better services for women and children. Our interventions are based on our Country Programme, signed with the Government of The Gambia. We implement our programmes in line with the country’s National Development Plan, the United Nations Development Assistance Framework, and the Sustainable Development Goals. 

How can you make a difference? 

Under the guidance and general supervision of the Child Survival and Development (CSD) Manager, the WASH Specialist supports the development, preparation, management, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the WASH programme within the country programme. The Specialist provides technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes, to facilitate the administration and achievement of the WASH-related output results in the country programme.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: An advanced university degree in public health, social sciences, behavior change communication, sanitary engineering, or another relevant technical field.
  • Work Experience: At least 5 years of relevant work experience in WASH-related programmes for developing countries is required. One year of deployment in a developing country is required.
  • Skills – knowledge and skills in the below components is required
             – Rural water supply for low- and middle-income countries – including water safety, sustainability.
             – Rural sanitation for low- and middle-income countries, incl sustainability; applying CATS principles.
             – Urban sanitation for low- and middle-income countries, incl sustainability
             – Handwashing with soap
             – WASH-in-Schools and Health Centres
             – Menstrual hygiene management
             – National government WASH policies, plans and strategies.
             – Analysis of national budgets and expenditure for basic WASH, and related advocacy
             – Human rights and WASH
             – Gender equality and WASH
  • Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required.

Desirables:

  • Additional relevant post-graduate courses that complement/supplement the main degree are a strong asset.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.

Only nationals of the country are eligible to apply, except internal (UNICEF) candidates who are legally permitted to work for UNICEF in the country independently of UNICEF appointment. UNICEF shall not facilitate the issuance of a visa and working authorization for internal candidates under consideration for positions at the national officer and general service category.
