The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa is seeking a Research Assistant to join Dr. Karin Hoth’s research team. The lab conducts research at the intersection of behavioral medicine and cognitive neuroscience. The Research Assistant will support clinical research by managing data (including neuropsychological, physiological and neuroimaging measures), recruiting and scheduling study participants, administering cognitive tests and questionnaires, managing regulatory paperwork, and working with investigators, staff and students as a member of an interdisciplinary team. The Hoth Lab studies factors that impact cognitive functioning, mood and quality of life among individuals with chronic medical conditions (i.e., cardiopulmonary diseases, hearing loss).
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with the research team including neuropsychologists, internal medicine physicians, audiologists, physiologists, radiologists, students and research support personnel.
- Collect, track, and enter data for grant funded studies
- Utilize statistical software to assist in the preparation of material for inclusion in presentations.
- Manage and organize regulatory documentation. Communicate with IRB staff, investigators, funding agencies, and regulatory authorities to ensure regulatory reports and reviews are submitted on time.
- Perform library research on specified topics, prepare bibliographies and abstracts according to instructions. As individual skills develop, analyze literature to assist in developing hypotheses for discussion.
- Assist in the design, development, execution, administration and maintenance of new protocols and clinical research studies. As individual skills develop, troubleshoot, analyze and propose modifications to protocols.
- Assist with participant recruitment efforts. This includes recruiting and interviewing prospective participants, obtaining informed consent, completing questionnaires and reviewing data with investigators.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills via telephone including rapidly developing rapport with potential research participants and speaking clearly and effectively over the phone.
- Administer cognitive tests and questionnaires with careful attention to detail.
- Review compliance with protocol, organize and maintain study records and files in conjunction with other research staff.
- Schedule and facilitate collection of physiological study measures, arrange equipment and testing materials, and MRI reservations in conjunction with medical and nursing staff.
- Create, maintain, and audit project databases based on research protocols developed by research staff or the principal investigator, including identifying and correcting discrepancies, assigning access privileges, adding new or updated measures, and compiling requested data sets for analysis.
- Assist with scoring and recording new data collected; perform data entry and data audits. As individual skills develop, will oversee data with minimal oversight.
- Participate actively in lab meetings to bring forward coordination issues requiring investigators’ attention. As skills develop, may present progress reports.
- Occasionally travel off-campus to other medical and community centers to conduct research/recruitment and to meet with investigators, researchers, and potential participants.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelors of Arts/Science degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or another biomedical related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of behavioral and/or medical research experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
- Data base management experience.
- Ability to quickly learn basic statistical analysis skills utilizing SPSS, SAS and/or R.
- Ability to work independently while being accountable and efficient with time management.
- Ability to perform and score standardized neuropsychological measures, or rapidly learn administration and scoring.
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience with REDCap software, Access, SPSS, SAS and/or R.
- Previous experience using EPIC.
- Previous experience working with individuals with chronic medical and/or psychiatric conditions.
- Previous experience administering neuropsychological measures.
- Previous experience working with brain MRI data.
- Familiarity with IRB regulatory processes.
- Working knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Good clinical practice (GCP) is the ethical and scientific quality standard for designing, conducting, recording, and reporting research involving the participation of human subjects.
