Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Description:The Department of Immunology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) for a microbiologist and immunologist with experience in the regulation of metabolic function through microbe-host interactions. The applicant should have strong knowledge in metabolism, immunology, microbiology, enteric infections, host-microbiome interactions, physiology and immune regulation of gut barrier function. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting experiments in animal models of intestinal inflammation, intestinal infection (bacteria and viruses) and metabolic dysfunction.Qualifications:Qualifications include a PhD in a relevant scientific field described above with at least 4-5 years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent and a strong publication record. Experience with techniques used in microbiology, mucosal immunology, cell and molecular biology, microbiome analyses, in vitro and in vivo work are required. Experience in multiparameter flow cytometry, and animal models of colitis, metabolic disease and intestinal infections. The applicant should have a strong knowledge of microbiology, immunology, mucosal immunology metabolism and microbiome.The incumbent must also show evidence of their ability to develop an independent research program and to independently direct projects. Previous supervisory and teaching experience will be required in order for the successful candidate to contribute to the guidance of technicians and trainees as well as participate in the teaching mission of the lab. Experience preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-review publications/journals, writing or helping to write grants, and presenting findings at local, national, or international conferences are also required.Responsibilities:

  • Conducting immunological analysis (Multiplex ELISA, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, FACS, microscopy, Conventional and Real time PCR and analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing data), infection biology, executing ex vivo and in vitro cell culture studies. Experience with animal models of colitis, metabolic disease (metabolic cage testing, insulin and glucose tolerance test in mice), viral/bacterial infections and immunophenotyping of gut barrier and adipose tissue is essential.
  • Designing, planning and executing research projects
  • Supervising other research staff/trainees
  • Working with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams
  • Presenting research findings to PIs and other members of the research team
  • Conducting data analysis and reporting
  • Ensuring project goals are met within the context of the larger program
  • Liaising with collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program.

Beyond these responsibilities, the individual is expected to participate in the preparation of grant applications. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the lab. The incumbent will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence and will design, direct, execute, analyze and present in written and oral forms novel investigative studies that build on and/or take advantage of the resources and expertise within the lab as well as incumbent’s academic expertise.Please note that this position is a one year term.Closing Date: 08/21/2024, 11:59PM ET
