We are an interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff and affiliates dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children, youth and their families and promoting equity from the start. Having established itself as a well-respected and internationally renowned research centre for over 20 years, HELP maintains strong relationships with school districts and other key partners in community and in the health, social service and municipal sectors. These relationships have allowed the centre to make an impact at multiple levels, ranging from government policy and investment, to regional and community development and service planning, to local school district programs and initiatives. HELP is grateful to work from the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) People at the University of British Columbia (UBC).The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia, seeks a full-time Research Associate.Under the supervision of Dr. Mariana Brussoni, HELP Faculty Director in the School of Population and Public Health, and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and HELP Early Development Instrument (EDI) and the Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CHEQ) Scientific Lead, Dr. Martin Guhn, with the support and mentorship provided by other HELP faculty members as well as by research collaborators across UBC, the incumbent will provide leadership for analysis of data from the Child Development Monitoring System tools, particularly the EDI and the CHEQ. In carrying out the duties, the incumbent will collaborate with Dr. Brussoni, Dr. Guhn and the Monitoring System Leadership Group on all aspects of EDI and CHEQ research.In this position of research leadership focusing on these two HELP Monitoring System tools, the position will participate in and contribute to HELP’s Early Years Program of Research. Specifically, providing research leadership and support in the following areas:

• Supporting the EDI and CHEQ programs of research at HELP, for example:

• Performing psychometric analyses on EDI and CHEQ data;
• Support the Implementation, Data Management and Analysis, Knowledge Translation and Reporting & Design teams providing expert guidance, ensuring integrity of data collection, analysis and reporting;
• Develop and submit peer-reviewed publications on EDI and CHEQ data;
• Develop new materials for presentations and other community/government engagement activities;
• Develop models and statistical procedures to explore the determinants of child development;
• Explore opportunities for incorporation of AI and machine learning into data analysis; and
• Support grant writing.

• As time availability allows, the incumbent will have opportunities to engage in other HELP research activities. This work provides important collaborative and mentoring opportunities with other HELP faculty, affiliates, international scholars and child development leaders. The incumbent will also participate regularly in HELP meetings, seminars and workshops.

• PhD in Statistics, Behavioural/Social Sciences, Psychometrics or Education Measurement and Data Analysis; Psychology; Sociology.
• Four or more years’ experience in a research environment and three years’ experience in statistical research and with experience in advanced statistical multi-level and longitudinal modeling techniques.
• Experience in using machine learning/AI and developing complex queries for data extraction and data manipulation.
• Familiarity with analyzing population health, administrative education and health datasets, and linkages between them.
• Familiarity with theoretical frameworks on child development and/or social determinants of health issues is an asset.
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives different from their own.
• Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism.
• Excellent understanding of quantitative research methodologies.
• Understanding of qualitative research methodologies an asset.
• Expertise and experience in AI/machine learning and a number of statistical methodologies, and confidence in conducting basic (e.g., regression, ANOVA) and advanced (e.g., latent class analysis, multilevel modeling) statistical analyses using software such as R, Mplus, SPSS, Stats, SAS.
• Knowledge and some experience in using qualitative methodologies and analytic strategies;
• Strong foundation in research design and measurement (e.g., validity, reliability), with preference for experience in relation to developmental theory/social and emotional learning/risk and resiliency.
• Excellent writing ability and publication record.
• Ability and willingness to work productively in a fast-paced and often demanding environment, with deadlines.
• Experience working in a team environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Experience with project management is required.
